The reporter learned from the Provincial Plant Protection General Station that this year the pest source base in the frequent outbreak areas of wheat blossom midge in our province has generally rebounded, with most places seeing the highest values in recent years, and the expected affected area across the province is about 4.5 million mu. Relevant experts suggest that fields where the "two periods" (the wheat heading and flowering period and the peak emergence period of adult blossom midges) overlap highly should be designated as target fields for control. Relevant experts suggest that fields where the "two periods" (the wheat heading and flowering period and the peak emergence period of adult blossom midges) overlap highly should be designated as target fields for control.

The station's survey found that in the central Huaibei and along the Huai areas, which are frequent outbreak areas of wheat blossom midge, the pest population base is higher than in the same period in recent years. At present, the development progress of wheat blossom midge in the areas along the Huai and western Huaibei is noticeably faster than in the eastern areas. The peak emergence period of adults overlaps highly with the heading and flowering period of medium- and late-maturing wheat varieties. Surveys in various places found that the heading and flowering period of medium- and late-maturing wheat varieties in the areas along the Huai and western Huaibei is April 18-20, and in eastern Huaibei is April 18-22, overlapping highly with the peak outbreak period of adult blossom midges. At the same time, climatic conditions are favorable for pupation and emergence of blossom midges.

The Provincial Plant Protection General Station suggests that, in view of the high pest population density in some areas of wheat blossom midge this year and the large differences in occurrence periods among different regions, farmers should carry out control according to pest conditions, crop conditions and weather. In areas with a low pest population base, control should target adults; in areas with a high pest population base, control should target mid-stage pupae and supplement control of adults.

Farmers' soil-sifting surveys found that control can be carried out when there are 5 insects per sample square, or when 3-5 flying adults can be seen at a glance by parting the wheat with the hands.

For control during the mid-pupal stage, farmers can mix 150 ml of 50% phoxim or 100 ml of 80% dichlorvos with 20 kg of fine soil and evenly broadcast it into the wheat field. Pull a rope or tap the wheat ears with a bamboo pole to work the pesticide into the soil and kill the pupae. Watering after application or applying the pesticide just before rain gives better results. For control during the adult stage, farmers can use 50 ml of 4.5% beta-cypermethrin, 40 ml of 48% chlorpyrifos or 100 ml of 80% dichlorvos per mu, add 30 kg of water and spray at the peak adult period.
