Many Methods for Propagating Goji Berry: A Full Analysis of Commonly Used Propagation Techniques
1. Seed propagation: Spring sowing should be carried out from late March to mid-May, when temperatures rise noticeably. Soak the seeds in 30°C warm water for 24 hours, then rub them, pick out the flesh and skin, take out the sunken seeds, and dry them. Mix the seeds with wet sand at 1:3, then place them indoors at about 20°C to germinate, keeping them moist. When about 30% of the seeds have cracked and shown white, germination is complete. For the nursery site, loam or sandy loam near a water source can be chosen as the seedbed. It requires flat terrain, good drainage, and ample sunlight. Apply 5000 kg of decomposed barnyard manure per mu as base fertilizer. After deep plowing, leveling, and fine raking, make beds 1.3 m wide, then use a small narrow hoe to open shallow furrows for drilling at a row spacing of 23-26 cm. The sowing furrow should be about 5 cm wide and 1-6 cm deep. Then evenly sow the germinated seeds in the furrows. After sowing, cover with fine soil about 1 cm thick, and cover with rice straw or wheat straw. The sowing rate per mu is 150-200 g, which can produce about 13,000 seedlings. Seedlings emerge 8-10 days after sowing. After emergence, immediately remove the covering to prevent leggy seedlings. When the seedlings are 3-5 cm tall, carry out the first thinning, at a plant spacing of 5-6 cm, keeping the stronger seedlings. The second thinning can be done in July, when the seedlings are more than 10 cm tall, and final spacing is set at 10-15 cm. From June to July, the seedlings enter a stage of vigorous growth and have a relatively high fertilizer requirement, so 30 kg of NPK compound fertilizer can be applied in furrows per mu, followed immediately by covering with soil to retain the fertilizer. When the seedlings reach about 30 cm in height, promptly remove the lateral branches growing from the base. Properly thin the lateral branches 40-60 cm above the ground, and pinch the tips above 60 cm in height, so that the trunk and main and lateral branches grow thick and strong.
2. Cuttage propagation: From February to March, select vigorous one-year-old water sprouts, cut them into short cuttings about 15 cm long, with the upper cut flat and the lower end cut into a wedge shape (slanted), soak them in a 50 microliter/liter indoleacetic acid solution for 10 minutes, take them out and rinse them, then insert them obliquely on a previously prepared seedbed at a row spacing of 23-27 cm and a plant spacing of 10-13 cm. The oblique insertion depth should generally be 2/3 of the cutting, with 1-2 nodes exposed above the ground. After insertion, fill in soil and firm it, water to settle them, and keep the soil moist regularly afterward. Roots generally form in 10-15 days. After the cuttings sprout, keep 1 relatively upright and sturdy new shoot per plant and prune away the rest. After the cuttage seedlings survive, they can be transplanted in the fall of the same year, or transplanted and established in the following spring.
3. Division propagation: Generally after Qingming Festival, directly dig up the root-sucker seedlings in the goji berry orchard for transplanting.
