Goji berries can protect brain cells and help prevent Alzheimer's disease
According to a report by Hong Kong's Ta Kung Pao, many people regard goji berries as a good traditional Chinese medicine for nourishing the liver and improving eyesight. A study by the Department of Anatomy at the University of Hong Kong's Faculty of Medicine has confirmed that goji berries can also protect neuron cells and help prevent Alzheimer's disease.
However, Zheng Chuanzhong, assistant professor in the Department of Anatomy at the University of Hong Kong's Faculty of Medicine, who led the study, said that it has not yet been discovered which component of goji berries can effectively protect brain cells, so the next step of the research will be to conduct animal experiments and find the component in goji berries that effectively protects brain cells.
In 2002, the Department of Anatomy at the University of Hong Kong's Faculty of Medicine was the first to discover one of the signal transmission pathways leading to brain cell apoptosis -- double-stranded RNA enzyme is related to the occurrence and worsening of Alzheimer's disease, and all cells in the human body will undergo apoptosis because the double-stranded RNA enzyme signal transmission pathway is activated. Since 2004, the University of Hong Kong's Faculty of Medicine has studied the treatment of Alzheimer's disease with traditional Chinese medicine, and unexpectedly discovered that goji berries contain a substance that reduces the activation of the double-stranded RNA enzyme signal transmission pathway. Zheng Chuanzhong pointed out that in addition to nourishing the liver and improving eyesight, goji berries are also a traditional Chinese medicine used as an anti-aging remedy.
Forgetting time, forgetting the usual locations of objects, getting lost because one cannot recognize the way... all of these are already signs of Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's disease is one of the common diseases of old age. At present, there are about 360,000 new cases of Alzheimer's disease worldwide each year, and about 100,000 people die from it.
