How do you rescue rice seedlings poisoned by trichloroacetaldehyde?
Phosphate fertilizer contains trichloroacetaldehyde and trichloroacetic acid. If phosphate fertilizer is applied excessively during rice seedling raising, or if inferior phosphate fertilizer with a high content of trichloroacetaldehyde (acid) is applied, the rice seedlings may suffer trichloroacetaldehyde (acid) poisoning. In mild cases, the seedling leaves curl and shrink, tillers grow in clusters, and brown necrotic streak spots appear at the leaf tips; in severe cases, the streak spots spread from the leaf tips toward the middle and base of the leaves, tillering decreases or stops, the root system becomes abnormally short and thick, and may even rot and turn black, ultimately killing the entire plant. For fields where the seedlings are only mildly affected, immediately adopt the method of irrigating by day and draining by night, repeatedly flushing with water until the poisoning symptoms no longer develop, then appropriately supplement nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizer to help the seedlings recover. For fields where the seedlings are more severely affected, after flushing with water, maintain a shallow water layer in the field, use 30 kg of ammonium bicarbonate per mu, mix with 20 kg of moist fine soil, and broadcast it after the dew has dried, then wait for the field to dry naturally before returning to normal management. This method can make the soil solution in the field slightly alkaline, promoting the decomposition of trichloroacetaldehyde and eliminating its toxicity. After detoxification, use 100 ml of Huimanfeng per mu, or 5 g of Lüfeisu, or 100 ml of Shiji Nongfeng (any one of these will do), add 50-60 kg of water and spray, which can promote the recovery and growth of the seedlings.
