Key Technical Points for Planting Sichuan Pepper in Late Autumn and Early Winter
Compared with spring sowing, autumn sowing for raising Sichuan pepper seedlings gives better results. With autumn sowing of Sichuan pepper, there is no need for germination forcing; the seeds germinate naturally, and seedlings generally emerge completely from late March to early April of the following year, emerging 10-15 days earlier than with spring sowing. In this way, the seedling root system forms early, disease resistance and stress resistance are strong, and the rapid growth period arrives earlier.
Land preparation and bed making. Choose a sandy loam plot that is sheltered from the wind and faces the sun, with deep and fertile soil and good drainage, as the seedbed. Apply 2000-3000 kg of barnyard manure per mu, and plow deeply and harrow finely. After land preparation, make beds 1 m wide.
Seed treatment. The seed coat of Sichuan pepper is hard, oily and waxy, impermeable to water, and relatively difficult to germinate, so degreasing treatment is needed before sowing. Soak the seeds in an alkaline water solution (use 25 g of alkaline powder for 1 kg of seeds, add water to the extent that the seeds are submerged), remove empty and shriveled seeds, soak for 2 days, then rub and wash off the oil on the seed coat, remove and dry before sowing. Plant ash can also be used to rub and remove the oil on the seed coat.
Open furrows for drilling. Sowing can be done from late autumn until before the soil freezes. Open 4-5 furrows per bed, with a furrow depth of 5 cm, and a sowing rate of 10-12 kg per mu. After sowing, cover the seeds with 2-3 cm of fine soil.
Early spring management. When the soil thaws in early spring of the following year, press it down once so that the seeds are in close contact with the soil, which helps the seeds absorb water and emerge. Guard the nursery land well and do not allow people or livestock to enter and trample it. If drought occurs in early spring, water it. A few days after watering, shallow hoe to preserve moisture, keep the bed surface moist, and prevent the soil from crusting.
