What are the precautions for growing beet? A quick guide
Beet originated in Europe and is a major sugar-making raw material introduced into China, second only to sugarcane. Beets are also divided into garden beet, sugar beet, fodder beet and leaf beet. Although beet can be divided into several types, their cultivation methods are actually much the same. At the same time, there are some points to note when growing beet. If you are interested, you can take a closer look below.
1. Growing conditions
Beet has certain requirements for the growing environment. Generally speaking, beet is grown in temperate or cold-temperate regions. Next, the growing site is best on a sunny, relatively flat plot with loose soil, sufficient fertility and convenient drainage and irrigation. Also, crop rotation is necessary; continuous cropping is not allowed, otherwise it will affect the yield and quality of beet.
2. Germination
The seed coat of beet is relatively hard, making it difficult for the seeds to absorb water. If they are not treated, they will not sprout easily. So before planting, we need to treat the beet seeds. Usually, the seeds are first soaked in warm water at about 50 degrees, and during soaking they must be stirred constantly so they are heated evenly, which ensures the seeds fully absorb water. After soaking for 12 hours, take them out, drain the water, and they can be sown.
3. Sowing
It is best to sow early at the right time. Generally, sowing can begin when the surface temperature is about 5 degrees. Next, when sowing, we usually use a beet-specific air-suction precision dibbling machine for dibbling on or under film. When sowing, the rows should be straight, the sowing should be even, and the depth should be consistent. The row spacing for sowing is generally about 50 to 60 cm, and the plant spacing is about 20 to 30 cm.
4. Fertilizer and water management
Fertilizer and water management is also very important in the beet growing process. If fertilizer and water management is improper, it will directly affect the yield and quality of beet. During the seedling growth stage of beet, generally no topdressing or watering is needed. When it reaches the vigorous growth stage, its fertilizer and water needs will increase sharply, so at this time we need to reasonably configure the use ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. During the rainy season, attention should be paid to drainage, and the soil should be loosened and earthed up at the same time, so as to prevent the soil from becoming compacted and affecting the normal growth of beet.
The above are several small issues to note in the process of growing beet, but these small issues still have a very large impact on beet growth, so we need to be even more careful when planting. As much as possible, improve the yield and quality of beet while reducing costs.
