How should wheat be planted this year? Hear what the experts say
Liu Fakui, a researcher and wheat cultivation expert at the @#@245@#@ Institute of the Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences, reminds farmers to pay attention to the following issues in this year's wheat sowing:
Drain waterlogged fields and remove excessive moisture, and free up stubble and prepare the soil in good time. Where rainfall has been excessive and there is standing water in the fields, effective measures such as digging ditches to drain water should be taken to remove the standing water from the fields as quickly as possible; where rainfall has been relatively light and the moisture is not excessive, the autumn harvest should be rushed to free up the stubble, and the soil should be dried and prepared in good time.
Grasp the suitable tillage period well and improve the quality of soil preparation. For clay soil, remember never to plow or harrow while wet; no-till direct seeding can be adopted; for loamy soil or sandy loam, shallow plowing to dry the soil can be used to secure the sowing period; for rice fields, broadcasting can be used for sowing.
Pay attention to the sowing period and varieties. Spring-type varieties must not be sown early. In areas north of the Yellow River, the suitable sowing period is October 15-20, while in the central and southern areas the sowing period is best kept to October 16-22. Even if semi-winter varieties are sown 3-5 days after the suitable sowing period, there will not be a major problem; appropriately increasing the sowing rate can make up for insufficient tillering. As long as sowing is not too late, there is generally no need to consider switching to spring-type varieties.
Grasp the suitable sowing rate. Generally, the suitable sowing rate for semi-winter varieties is 5-7 kg, and the suitable sowing rate for spring-type varieties is 7.5-10 kg.
Increase the soil's comprehensive fertilizer supply capacity and use a rational ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. Whether on high-fertility fields or medium-fertility fields, the amount of basal nitrogen fertilizer must not be too large; urea must be applied as a topdressing at 7.5-12.5 kg during the wheat jointing stage next spring.
Pay attention to pest and disease control, and vigorously promote the use of coated seeds.
Researcher Liu Fakui believes that although the heavy rainfall this autumn has had a certain adverse impact on the autumn harvest, soil preparation and wheat sowing, it should be recognized even more that the rainfall has a positive impact on wheat sowing and growth, and that sufficient subsoil moisture is very favorable for achieving a full stand of seedlings in one sowing. All localities must adapt to the times and local conditions and adopt scientific response decisions, so as to lay a good sowing foundation for winning a bumper wheat harvest next year.
