Detailed Introduction to Three High-Quality Garlic Varieties

Farmers in Zhongmu County, Henan Province, discovered a mutant plant during many years of cultivating "Soviet garlic." After years of purification and rejuvenation, they developed an improved garlic variety, later named Songcheng garlic. Songcheng garlic overcame the original variety's shortcomings of mild spiciness, many small cloves, thin and weak garlic scapes, and purple-red stripes on the outer skin, while preserving the original variety's advantage of large bulbs.

This variety has now been extended to the autumn-sowing garlic regions of northern China. According to incomplete statistics, in the autumn-sowing garlic regions of China, the planting area of Songcheng garlic is over 75%.

Songcheng white garlic: The leaves are broad and thick, the plant type is open, and the pseudostem lodges after maturity. The garlic bulb diameter is about 5 cm, and a single bulb weighs about 50 g, with the largest reaching 120 g. The garlic scapes are short and thin. Generally, the yield per mu is about 100 kg of garlic scapes and 1200 kg-1500 kg of garlic bulbs. Songcheng white garlic is the preferred variety for export.

Cangshan garlic: Cangshan garlic is a local variety from Shandong Province. The garlic bulb diameter is 4.5 cm, the skin color is pure white, and the cloves are few and large. A single clove weighs about 3.5 g, and each bulb has an average of 6 cloves arranged in two layers. A single bulb weighs about 40 g, with a strong spicy flavor. The garlic scapes are thick and long, with an average scape length of about 40 cm and a thickness of 0.46 cm-0.65 cm. Each garlic scape weighs 25 g-35 g. Generally, the yield per mu is 500 kg of garlic scapes and 800 kg-900 kg of garlic bulbs. It is a mid-to-late maturing variety used for both scapes and bulbs.
