How to manage garlic under plastic mulch after it turns green again? Remember these key points
1. Topdressing and watering. From late February to early March, temperatures rise and garlic under plastic mulch begins to turn green again. Because plastic mulch has a heat-preserving and moisture-retaining effect on the soil, generally, when garlic under plastic mulch has been watered thoroughly before winter for overwintering, it should not be watered early in spring, to prevent the soil temperature from dropping. If there is a spring drought and the soil lacks water, water once in early to mid-March. Remove the mulch in April, weed, loosen the soil, apply topdressing, and water. Apply 15-20 kg of urea or 30-40 kg of ammonium bicarbonate and 10-15 kg of potassium sulfate per mu. After fertilizing, irrigate once thoroughly. Appropriately control watering in the later stage. Keep the surface soil in the field alternately dry and moist, drain water promptly on rainy days, and stop irrigation 5-7 days before harvesting the scapes and the garlic bulbs.
2. Disease and pest control. In the middle and late growth stages of garlic under plastic mulch, field humidity is relatively high. When the daily average temperature reaches about 20°C in late April, garlic leaf blight and gray mold begin to occur. In the early stage of the disease, small white round spots appear at the tips of garlic leaves, or light brown elongated oval lesions appear on the leaf surface. When the disease is severe, the leaves wither and die, the base rots, and the garlic plants lodge. When the diseased plant rate reaches 15%, spray 50% carbendazim 800 times solution or 20% triadimefon 2000 times solution for control. In early April, if garlic plants turn yellow, wilt, and root maggots are found, use 90% trichlorfon 1000 times solution to drench the roots and kill the pests.
3. Harvesting scapes and bulbs. Harvest the scapes when they emerge about 10 cm above the top leaf sheath, preferably around 2 p.m. on a sunny day. First use your hands to break the scape at 5-10 cm above the ground at the base of the garlic plant, then pull out the scape. Harvest the garlic bulbs 15-20 days after harvesting the scapes.
