Introduction to the Characteristics and Cultivation Techniques of the Eshu No. 2 Sweet Potato Variety
Eshu No. 2 is a new high-starch sweet potato variety bred by the Food Crops Research Institute of the Hubei Academy of Agricultural Sciences. It is a new achievement from the national "Eighth Five-Year Plan" key research project and was approved by the Hubei Provincial Crop Variety Approval Committee in March 1996. Its main characteristics and traits are:
Young leaves light green, leaf shape shallow compound incised, leaf color green, veins purple, stems green with purple, medium-vine type creeping growth, 3.9 tubers per plant, tuber shape spindle-shaped, tuber skin red, tuber flesh light yellow. Good sprouting ability, strong growth vigor, top-grade seedling quality. Fast recovery after transplanting, early tuber formation; 60 d after transplanting, average tuber weight per plant 197.0 g, daily weight gain per hectare 185.85 kg, which is 107.0 g more in average tuber weight per plant and 103.50 kg more in daily weight gain per hectare than Nanshu 88, higher by 84.1% and 79.6% respectively. Strong shade tolerance, suitable for intercropping and relay intercropping; under low-light conditions, the photosynthetic rate is 3.4% higher than Nanshu 88; under shading conditions, the photosynthetic rate is 2.1% higher than Nanshu 88. Its resistance to black spot disease and root rot is stronger than that of Xushu 18. Dry matter rate 32.2%, and 100 g of dry tubers contains 21.94 g of starch.
From 1991 to 1993, Eshu No. 2 participated in the Hubei Provincial Regional Trial (including preliminary trial). The average yields of fresh tubers, dried tubers, starch, and vines and leaves over 3 years and 14 site-times increased by 4.3%, 4.9%, 12.0%, and 10.8% respectively compared with Xushu 18, and by 0.6%, 6.7%, 32.1%, and 13.9% respectively compared with Nanshu 88. At present, it has been promoted and applied in 12 counties (cities) in our province. Since 1992, the cumulative promotion area has reached more than 46,000 hm2. The counties (cities) with larger areas include Zigui, Changyang, Yichang, and Zhicheng City.
