What varieties and types of Pinellia ternata are there? Detailed introduction
Pinellia ternata commercial products are subglobose, some slightly flattened and oblique, 1-1.5 cm in diameter. The surface is white or pale yellow, the top has a sunken stem scar, surrounded by densely distributed pitted root scars commonly called "brown eyes," and the lower part is bluntly rounded and relatively smooth. The texture is solid, the cross-section is pure white and kidney-shaped, rich in farinaceous character, odorless, pungent in taste, numbing to the tongue and irritating to the throat, and sticky when chewed.
In the past, commercial Pinellia ternata was divided into many commodity types according to production area;
Xufuzi: the adjacent areas of Sichuan and Yunnan, especially that produced in Zhaotong, Yunnan, is the most famous and has the reputation of "Pearl Pinellia." The products from nearby Leibo, Pingshan, and Mabian are also of good quality. In the past they were all gathered and distributed in Xufu, hence the name "Xufuzi."
What was produced in eastern Sichuan was formerly often gathered and distributed in Chongqing and was commonly called "Chuanzi"; what was produced in Jingzhou, Qianjiang, and other places in Hubei was gathered and distributed in Jingzhou and was also named "Jingzhouzi," and so on. There were also "Fuyangzi" (produced in Fuyang, Quxian, Lanxi, and other places in Zhejiang), "Ningguozi" (produced in the Ningguo, Xuancheng, Jingxian, and Dangtu areas of southern Anhui). In addition, what was produced in Funan and Yingshang counties of Anhui was commonly called "Ying Banxia"; what was produced in the Yinhui District of Guichi was "Hui Banxia"; what was produced in Shucheng was "Shu Banxia," and especially the "Jiao Banxia" from Jiaopoji in Funan was considered the best grade.
The "Pearl Pinellia" produced in Zhaotong is famous for its round grains, solid texture, white color, and luster, and is mostly for export. Other Xufuzi (such as that produced in Leibo and Mabian) mostly has uneven grains and is not neatly rounded (because during processing it is pared and scraped and washed in alum water). "Chuanzi" is also good, but the grains are not as large as those produced in Zhaotong. The rest, such as Jingzhouzi, Fuyangzi, and Ningguozi, are all not bad. "Jiao Banxia," "Ying Banxia," and others, because they are large, white, full of powder, heavy and solid, with one side sunken and the "brown eyes" obvious, and the other side hemispherical, are mostly for export and are praised as "Round Pearl Pinellia."
