Approval number: Guoshen Dao 2006073

Variety name: Luodao 998

Breeding unit: Luoyang Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Henan Province

Variety source: Systematic selection from upland rice 277

Characteristics: This variety is a japonica-type conventional upland rice. Grown as a wheat-stubble upland rice in the Huang-Huai-Hai region, its whole growth period is 108 days, 1 day earlier than the control upland rice 277. The plant type is relatively compact, tillering ability is medium, plant height is 94.6 cm, panicle length is 18.1 cm, effective panicles per mu are 196,000, the panicle-forming rate is 64.8%, total grains per panicle are 96.7, seed-setting rate is 74.2%, and 1000-grain weight is 27 g. Resistance: moderately susceptible to leaf blast, susceptible to neck blast; drought resistance grade 3. Main rice quality indicators: head rice rate 62.8%, chalky grain rate 61.0%, chalkiness degree 11.2%, gel consistency 66 mm, amylose content 16.86%.

Yield performance: In 2004, it participated in the regional trial of upland rice varieties in the medium-late maturity group of the wheat-stubble rice region of Huang-Huai-Hai, with an average yield of 314.6 kg per mu, 10.1% higher than the control upland rice 277 (extremely significant); in 2005, in the continued trial, the average yield was 300.9 kg per mu, 11.4% higher than the control upland rice 277 (extremely significant); the two-year regional trial average yield was 307.8 kg per mu, 10.8% higher than the control upland rice 277. In the 2005 production trial, the average yield was 308.9 kg per mu, 8.6% higher than the control upland rice 277.

Cultivation points: 1. Seed treatment: before sowing, dress seeds with chemicals and micro-fertilizers or seed coating agents to control seedling-stage diseases and pests. 2. Sowing: in the Huang-Huai region, sowing is generally in early June, sowing rate 6-8 kg/mu, sowing depth 2-3 cm, row spacing 20-25 cm. 3. Weed control: after sowing and before emergence, use herbicides for soil sealing; if weeds appear at the seedling stage, use appropriate herbicides for foliar treatment; weeds in the field at the middle and late stages should be pulled out promptly by hand. 4. Fertilizer and water management: before sowing, apply 3000-5000 kg of decomposed organic fertilizer per mu and 40 kg of compound fertilizer, as well as 1-2 kg each of ferrous sulfate and zinc sulfate; at the five-leaf stage, apply 10 kg of urea per mu together with irrigation; at the jointing stage, topdress 7-10 kg of urea per mu together with irrigation; around full heading, topdress 3-5 kg of urea as appropriate; during the growth period, irrigate promptly when drought occurs, generally requiring 4-6 irrigations in normal years. 5. Disease and pest control: before sowing, apply insecticides together with land preparation to control underground pests; at the seedling stage, pay attention to controlling rice thrips and cabbage caterpillars; from tillering to heading, pay attention to controlling rice leaf roller and rice planthopper; from boot breaking to full heading, pay attention to controlling rice blast.

Approval opinion: This variety meets the national rice variety approval standards and has passed approval. This variety has relatively high yield, relatively good yield stability, relatively strong drought resistance, is susceptible to rice blast, and has average rice quality. It is suitable for planting as summer-sown upland rice in the light-occurrence rice blast areas of the Huang-Huai River basin in Henan, Jiangsu, Anhui, and Shandong, and in Hanzhong, Shaanxi.
