Growing techniques for Panicled Codonopsis

Panicled Codonopsis is a plant in the Campanulaceae family, Codonopsis genus, also known as Ji Yao Shen, Zhu Er Shen and Bai Di Gua. Zhu Er Shen is a powerful Chinese medicinal herb whose main effects are stopping bleeding and promoting tissue regeneration; it can also tonify lung deficiency and treat cough due to lung deficiency. So how should Panicled Codonopsis be grown? Let's take a look at the detailed introduction below.

1. Site selection and land preparation

Panicled Codonopsis prefers fertile, moist environments and is suited to growing in neutral or slightly acidic soil that is loose, well-drained, on slightly sloping land and rich in humus. It dislikes continuous cropping and is afraid of waterlogging and clay; when planting, choose a previous crop of grass-family plants, or choose wasteland or a plot that has been out of cultivation for more than 4 years. Before planting, plow several times and do a good job of soil disinfection and sterilization. If the soil is poor in fertility, you can also apply a moderate amount of organic fertilizer as a base fertilizer; after shaping and raking level, make raised beds ready for sowing and planting. In addition, Panicled Codonopsis generally grows wild in understory environments and fears strong light, so if it is grown artificially in an understory environment, the shade among the trees suits its growth; if it is on flat land, a shade shed must be built.

2. Sowing and raising seedlings

Seed propagation is generally used. The sowing time is generally best in December in winter; too early makes it prone to rodent damage, while too late leads to poor growth. Use the broadcast sowing method, spreading the seeds evenly over the plot, and control the plant and row spacing well. Generally 4-5 kg of seed is used per mu; after sowing, cover with a layer of 3 cm burnt soil ash, then cover with grass to keep warm and moist. After the seedlings emerge, remove the covering grass promptly so the seedlings can emerge safely, and do a good job of thinning and weeding. When the seedlings grow to 3-5 cm, final thinning can be carried out, and at the same time strengthen fertilizer and water management to promote seedling growth.

3. Transplanting and establishing

Transplanting and establishing generally begin in autumn of the second year, in September-October. When lifting seedlings for transplanting, be careful not to damage the overwintering buds; remove the aboveground stems and place the seedlings in a cool, ventilated place for later use. After lifting, they should be planted immediately to avoid weak plant growth and a low survival rate. When planting, apply 1500-2000 kg of decomposed stable manure and 50 kg of compound fertilizer per mu as base fertilizer. To reduce disease and improve the survival rate after establishing, treat the seedlings with pesticide for disinfection and sterilization before planting. Dig holes at a plant and row spacing of 15cm×15 cm and plant at a depth of about 5 cm, then cover with soil, press firmly, and water thoroughly once.

4. Field management

After establishing, weed frequently to keep the field clean. After the rainy season, loosen the soil promptly to increase soil permeability and prevent hardening, which is unfavorable to plant growth. Also topdress promptly with diluted human and livestock manure water, phosphate fertilizer, compound fertilizer and farmyard manure to promote plant growth. Generally, the first topdressing is applied at the flowering stage, with about 300 kg of human and livestock manure water per mu; the second is at the full flowering stage, with 200-300 kg of human and livestock manure water and 30 kg of phosphate fertilizer per mu to promote fruit ripening and rhizome growth; before winter, in combination with overwintering measures, apply 300 kg of stable manure and farmyard manure per mu to help the plants overwinter safely.
