How to germinate corn seeds

Corn is one of the important food crops in our country, and it is widely distributed in cultivation across the country. Generally speaking, when sowing corn seeds we use direct seeding and do not need to carry out germination treatment. However, because the growth period of some corn varieties is relatively long, in order to promote rapid emergence of corn seeds and increase the emergence rate of corn seeds, germination treatment is also very important. Today let us learn together about the method for germinating corn seeds.

1. Seed soaking treatment

Generally speaking, before germinating corn seeds, we all need to go through seed soaking treatment, so how is the soaking done? One week before sowing, place the selected high-quality seeds into cold water, human urine, warm water, potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution, rice vinegar, and potassium fertilizer solution for soaking. Because the soaking materials used are different, the soaking durations are also different, respectively eight to ten hours, six to twelve hours, eight to twelve hours, ten to twelve hours, twenty-four to thirty-six hours, and twelve to twenty-four hours.

2. Germination method

When the seed soaking time has been reached, we need to scoop out the seeds and wash them clean in warm water at about fifty degrees. Then prepare a heated kang or equipment that can keep warm, spread a layer of plastic sheeting, pile a layer of rice straw, spread a layer of burlap sacks or cotton cloth on the straw, and finally spread the rinsed corn seeds on the prepared germination equipment at a thickness of about ten cm. A layer of burlap sacks or cotton cloth also needs to be covered over the seeds to keep them warm and moist. Of course, we also need to place a thermometer in the middle of the germinating seeds to make it easier to observe and control the temperature. During germination, the temperature is generally controlled between twenty-five and thirty degrees, and the seeds are turned about once every sixty minutes, with watering once every twelve hours, to avoid burning the corn seeds.

3. Seed drying method

After germinating the corn seeds, we need to dry the seeds, because during the germination process we need to water them. Generally the germination time is thirty-six to forty-eight hours. Place the seeds in a cool, ventilated place to dry, then pick out the seeds that have not obviously sprouted or have not sprouted at all, and finally, after the surface of the seeds is dry, they can be sown. They must not be too dry, otherwise it will still affect the emergence situation after planting.

4. Precautions

When germinating corn seeds, there are also many issues we need to pay attention to. Generally speaking, the main ones are the following. First, for seeds purchased with seed coating and film coating, we need to remove the seed coating and film coating before germinating. Second, the sprout point of germinated corn seeds does not need to be too long, otherwise it will also affect the sowing quality. Also, when sowing the germinated seeds, we need to water the ground thoroughly and carry out sowing in water. Finally, it is best to germinate in stages rather than germinating all at once, and at the same time the drying temperature is about three to four degrees, so as to control the growth of the seed sprout points.
