Control methods for pests and diseases of Jiaogulan

Jiaogulan (Gynostemma pentaphyllum) is a plant whose entire body is a treasure: roots, stems, leaves and seeds can not only be made into tea, but also used as medicine. It has anti-inflammatory and detoxifying effects, and relieves cough and phlegm, and is now mostly used as a tonic and strengthening medicine. However, during cultivation, the damage caused by pests and diseases will affect its yield and quality. Let's take a look at the control methods for pests and diseases of Jiaogulan below.

1. Powdery mildew

Powdery mildew is the main fungal disease of Jiaogulan. When it occurs, small white mold spots appear on the leaves. As the disease develops, the mold spots gradually spread around, forming large mold patches. When humidity is high, it spreads rapidly, causing the entire leaf surface to be covered with white powdery material. When the disease is severe, the leaves turn yellow and curl.

Control method: When diseased plants are found, pull them out promptly and take them out of the field to prevent spread to other plants, strengthen fertilizer and water management, and increase the disease resistance of the plants. In the early stage of the disease, spraying with thiophanate-methyl solution can be used for control, with good results.

2. Leaf spot disease

Leaf spot disease is also one of the fungal diseases of Jiaogulan, mainly harming the leaves. When it occurs, water-soaked lesions first appear at the leaf tips or leaf margins, and gradually spread toward the center. Later, the lesions become yellow blighted spots. When the disease is severe, the leaves of the whole plant will rot and fall off, causing the plant to die.

Control method: Strengthen fertilizer and water management to increase disease resistance, thoroughly clean the garden in winter to reduce pathogenic fungi, and when the disease occurs, spray carbendazim and Bordeaux mixture for control.

3. White silk disease

It is also a fungal disease, mainly harming the stems, leaves and root system. When it occurs, it starts from the stems close to the ground and gradually spreads to the leaves. The affected stems appear dark brown and grow white silky mycelium. Finally, the plant will rot, wither and gradually die.

Control method: When diseased plants are found, pull them out promptly, take them out of the field and burn them, carry out disinfection and sterilization measures for the diseased holes, and remove diseased and residual plants in winter to reduce overwintering sources of the disease. When the disease occurs, spraying chlorothalonil can be used for control.

4. Cutworm

Cutworm is the main underground pest of Jiaogulan, with adults and larvae causing damage. The larvae come out at night to move around, continuously gnawing on the tender parts of the leaves and damaging the growth nodes, causing poor plant growth, and they will bite off the stems and leaves of seedlings, resulting in missing plants.

Control method: Thoroughly clean the garden in winter, remove weeds and dead branches, eliminate overwintering larvae and pupae, use light traps to kill adults to reduce egg laying, and use poison bait to kill larvae at the seedling stage.
