How to Grow Dendrobium nobile? Planting Methods and Key Technical Points
Dendrobium nobile is a type of Dendrobium, also known as flat grass, hanging orchid, and so on. It is mainly cultivated in Guizhou, Sichuan, and other parts of China, with the Dendrobium nobile from Chishui, Guizhou being especially famous; it has also been approved by the national quality inspection bureau as a national geographical indication protected product. So how do you grow Dendrobium nobile? What are the requirements when planting it? Now follow along with the editor to learn its planting methods.

1. Planting Preparation
Dendrobium nobile has very strict requirements for its growing environment. Generally, the annual average temperature must be above ten degrees, the lowest winter temperature must exceed three degrees, and the frost period must not exceed fifteen days. The planting site should be chosen in a half-shade, half-sun area, with humidity generally no lower than eighty percent. The best tree species for planting Dendrobium nobile are fast-growing trees such as yellow crape myrtle, pear trees, and camphor trees. The planting site should have stones, and moss should grow on the stones. After choosing the site, prepare the land, and on the stone surface just dig holes with a row spacing of forty cm and a plant spacing of thirty cm.
2. Propagation Methods
There are generally two propagation methods for Dendrobium nobile, namely tissue rapid propagation and division plus cutting propagation. Tissue rapid propagation requires about fifteen days of hardening off; once the leaves of the tissue-cultured seedlings are deep green, they can be taken out of the bottles and planted. For division plus cutting propagation, select robust one-year-old or two-year-old plants free of pests and diseases as stock plants, then cut off excessively long roots as well as broken branches and dead branches unsuitable for planting, and finally divide them into small clumps for planting.
3. Scientific Planting
The best time to plant Dendrobium nobile is March to April in spring and August to September in autumn, especially spring planting, which gives the best survival rate, yield, and quality. There are two planting methods for Dendrobium nobile, namely the stone-attached planting method and the tree-attached planting method. When planting, we all need to fix the Dendrobium nobile plants onto stones or tree trunks. If using tree-attached planting, planting is generally done from top to bottom; the stone-attached planting method, however, requires planting according to the corresponding row spacing and plant spacing.
4. Field Management
Field management for Dendrobium nobile is not very different from the management of Dendrobium cultivation. After planting, we should maintain a certain humidity while also preventing too much water. Topdressing is generally carried out in the second year, mainly with decomposed farmyard manure, and it will also include special Dendrobium fertilizer and Dendrobium nutrient solution and other nutrients; topdressing twice a year is enough. We should promptly remove weeds around the growing Dendrobium; weeding is generally chosen on rainy days, as this will not damage the Dendrobium's root system. When the Dendrobium is growing very vigorously, we should prune and shape it appropriately to maintain reasonable ventilation in the field. If the Dendrobium has been growing for many years, then part of the old roots need to be cut off, which can promote the growth of new plants and improve the yield and quality of Dendrobium nobile.
5. Pest and Disease Control
Under inadequate management or the influence of climate conditions and various other factors, Dendrobium nobile can also suffer from some relatively serious pests and diseases. The most common diseases include soft rot, black spot, and anthracnose, which we can usually control with carbendazim, and secondly with Kebo and thiophanate-methyl respectively. The main pests are snails, Fiorinia scale, and red spider mites. We can use lime to control snails; for Fiorinia scale, dimethoate is often used; for red spider mites, low-toxicity acaricides are used, and the control effect of dicofol is very good.
