Propagation methods of agarweed

Agarweed is a cosmopolitan red alga, generally growing on rocks on the seabed, but because the market demand for agarweed keeps increasing, artificial cultivation is needed, so for this kind of algae, how do we propagate it? What propagation methods are there? Below let us learn about the propagation methods of agarweed together.

I. Spore propagation

Spore propagation is a propagation method that uses the male and female gametophytes of agarweed spores. We need to prepare the male gametes of agarweed and the nearly mature or mature female gametes, relying on the flow of seawater to achieve fertilization. After fertilization, a zygote is formed; the zygote cannot leave the mother body, and after the cells fuse, a fusion cell is formed; the fusion cell produces spore filaments, and finally a tetrasporophyte is formed. After the tetrasporophyte matures, the sporangium wall ruptures, the spores scatter onto the substrate on the seabed, and finally agarweed grows. This is the process of agarweed spore propagation; during propagation it needs to go through multiple divisions and fusions before it can formally grow and develop.

II. Vegetative propagation

Vegetative propagation is a new propagation method formed through continuous research in later periods. The methods of vegetative propagation are mainly divided into three types, namely stolon propagation, rhizoid propagation and vegetative branch propagation. Let us learn about them in detail below.

1. Stolon propagation

Stolon propagation is when the agarweed seedlings grow to a certain size; at this time the agarweed will grow stolons, and these stolons will also keep growing. Finally we can see that some root-like things appear on the stolons; these root-like substances will grow separate agarweed upward, and keep increasing, making the individual agarweed plants more and more numerous. This propagation method is also often used in later planting processes.

2. Rhizoid propagation

Rhizoid propagation is a method that uses the false branch tips of agarweed for propagation. These false branch tips are like the young shoots of agarweed spore propagation, then we cultivate the cut-off false branch tips, and finally they can also grow stolons and erect branches, and finally grow into separate individuals. As for this propagation method, in later periods we can generally take seeds when harvesting agarweed: keep the false branch tips of the agarweed on the harvesting net, then put them back into seawater, and they can continue to grow and propagate.

3. Vegetative branch propagation

Vegetative branch propagation is currently the most commonly used propagation method for agarweed. This propagation method mainly adopts the branches of agarweed or uses the cut-off base of the main branch for propagation. But we should note that the cut-off base of the main stem must be at the junction with the rock, so that new buds can grow and form new individual agarweed plants. Of course, if cage culture is used, then after the branches on the cage are cut off, the base remaining on the cage can continue to grow.

The above are the two main propagation methods most commonly used for agarweed. The editor has only briefly introduced them to everyone here, hoping to help everyone. If you want to learn about the cultivation techniques of agarweed, remember to contact the editor.
