Propagation methods for the prickly ash tree

Prickly ash is widely used in dishes in many parts of our country and is a very popular seasoning. Its market demand is relatively large, and as market demand grows, more and more people are growing it. However, a problem many veteran growers now face is how to propagate the prickly ash tree, so how should the prickly ash tree be propagated? Below, the editor brings you the propagation methods for prickly ash, so let's take a look together!

1. Seed propagation

At present, prickly ash propagation is mainly done by seed, but because prickly ash seeds are relatively hard, high in oil, and poor in permeability, the germination rate is relatively low if they are not treated. Therefore, before sowing, the seeds must be degreased and deoiled to increase the germination rate. Then when sowing, select out shriveled seeds and seeds with pests, diseases, or damage, and do a good job of germination promotion and disinfection. Sow in spring or autumn; autumn is relatively more suitable, with a relatively high emergence rate and uniform seedling rate. For the specific steps, you can check previous articles!

2. Division propagation

Division propagation is mainly done in spring when the prickly ash tree has not yet fully sprouted; then select suckering seedlings grown within two years and girdle them at the base. Then bury them in the soil to promote sprouting and rooting at the girdled cut. When roots have successfully grown, after about one growth cycle, separate the suckering seedlings, which can be managed as a separate individual. Alternatively, cut away more than half of the base of the suckering seedling and earth it up to promote growth. After separating the suckering seedlings, observe their growth; if they grow well, they can be appropriately transplanted. Otherwise, they need to remain in the seedbed until more new roots have grown before transplanting.

3. Air layering propagation

Air layering propagation is mainly done each spring. When the temperature gradually rises at the beginning of spring, select branches in the prickly ash orchard that grow robustly, have high yield, and are free of pests and diseases as the layering branches. Cut the branch transversely to its xylem, then pull it upward 20 cm. Insert it into a container; the bottom of the container needs ventilation, and the inside should be filled with soil. After insertion, water thoroughly to ensure the branch has enough water and nutrients. Cover the top of the container with a water-permeable material to ensure moisture from rain. Then, after the branch successfully roots the following year, transplanting can begin.

4. Cutting propagation

Cutting propagation is similar to air layering propagation. First, select branches grown within one year that are thick and strong, have a large amount of flowering and fruiting, and are uninjured as the cuttings. Then, when cutting, prevent the cut from being too large, keep it as smooth as possible, and prevent wound infection. After cutting, place the branches in a solution such as acetic acid for root promotion, treat them well, and improve the rooting rate of the cuttings. After treatment, insert the branches vertically into the prepared substrate, strengthen management, and promote branch growth.

The above is a brief introduction to prickly ash tree propagation methods. Prickly ash tree propagation also includes grafting propagation and so on, but its usage rate is not high, and it is also relatively troublesome to carry out, so it is not suitable for large-scale propagation. Therefore, everyone must carefully choose the propagation method. That is all for today's introduction. This article is for reference only. Thank you for reading and supporting.
