Cultivation Techniques for Elderberry

Elderberry is a deciduous shrub in the honeysuckle family (Caprifoliaceae). Every part of the plant can be used as medicine, making it a plant with high medicinal value, and elderberry can be found in many traditional Chinese medicine formulas in China. Wild and cultivated areas exist in many provinces of China, and the cultivated area of elderberry is now growing larger and larger, with many people beginning to plant it. So how should elderberry be planted? Below, the editor brings you the cultivation techniques for elderberry. Let's take a look!

1. Timely planting

Elderberry was originally a wild plant, so its growth ability is relatively strong and it has low requirements for soil; it is enough to ensure the soil is fertile, loose and deep, and free of pests and diseases. Generally, the best cultivation time for elderberry is in spring and autumn each year. Before planting, the land should first be prepared by deep plowing and leveling, then sufficient base fertilizer should be applied. The base fertilizer must be fully mixed with the soil, then the soil should be backfilled in time; after treading and compacting the soil, the seedlings can be placed in. When planting in spring, plant appropriately shallowly; conversely, in autumn plant slightly deeper. After cultivation, water thoroughly to settle the roots and promote the seedlings' rooting and growth.

2. Water management

Elderberry has moderate water needs. For spring planting, water about once a month. However, if there is a lot of rain in summer, the amount of watering can be reduced, and when it is even greater, watering may even be skipped. Also, after rain, excess standing water in the field should be drained promptly to prevent excessive water from causing root rot in elderberry. Elderberry planted in autumn should be given sufficient winter-protection water, and then thawing water should be applied promptly in early spring. If too much water is given to autumn-planted elderberry, it is prone to freezing damage, affecting growth. Therefore, when planting elderberry, water management should be well controlled according to weather changes and planting time.

3. Rational topdressing

Elderberry has strong growth ability and relatively high nutrient demands. In addition to applying sufficient base fertilizer in the field before planting, it needs at least two topdressings per year for the first three years after planting. Generally, the first topdressing is around May to June each year, mainly to improve elderberry's growth vigor and promote the growth of branches and shoots. Then in early winter, a second topdressing is applied, mainly with decomposed farmyard manure, to help elderberry overwinter. Then in early spring of the second year, apply urea once; after the third year, only one application of farm machinery fertilizer is needed each year.

4. Field management

During elderberry's growth period, cultivation and weeding should be done well to improve field aeration. Generally, before early spring each year, deep plowing should be carried out once, which can not only effectively control weeds but also improve soil aeration and promote nutrient absorption. Then when the seedlings are about 15 cm tall and at the time of the first topdressing, a topdressing should be carried out once each; after 3 years from transplanting, it should be done once every spring and summer. Finally, the elderberry plants need to be pruned appropriately, removing aged, pest-damaged, overly long, overly dense, and crossing or overlapping branches to prevent them from affecting the plant's light absorption, but be careful to retain new branches.

The above is a brief introduction to elderberry cultivation techniques. Planting elderberry is relatively simple and does not require the cumbersome sowing preparations of other plants. However, after sowing, water, fertilizer, and field management still need to be done well to ensure healthy growth of elderberry and increase your planting benefits.
