How to soak and sprout cucumber seeds

Before planting cucumbers, in order to promote the seeds to germinate as quickly as possible, increase the germination rate, and lay a solid foundation for a bumper harvest, seed soaking and sprouting treatment is generally carried out before sowing. So how exactly should cucumber seed soaking and sprouting be done? Follow along with the editor to see the detailed introduction.

1. Seed selection and sunning

Before planting, choose a suitable superior variety, select seeds that are plump and uniform in size, and place them in the sun to dry for 1-2 days. When sunning the seeds, do not let the seeds directly touch the ground; use cloth as a barrier, so as to avoid the seeds being scalded and losing their vitality. In addition, when sunning the seeds, to make the seeds heat evenly, stir them several times from time to time during sunning, so that all the seeds can fully absorb the heat.

2. Seed soaking

After the seeds have been sunned, put them in a container, then add hot water at 55-60 degrees; the amount of water only needs to submerge the seeds. When adding the hot water, stir constantly, which can both make the seeds heat evenly and avoid reducing seed vitality due to excessively high water temperature. After soaking for 10 minutes, once the water temperature drops to normal temperature, soak the seeds for 4-6 hours. After soaking is complete, rub and wash the gelatinous substance on the seed surface clean, then scoop them out and let them dry.

3. Disinfection

In order to avoid the harm of pests and diseases, seeds are generally given disinfection and sterilization treatment. Usually, a very low-concentration carbendazim solution is used to soak the seeds for 1 hour, then they are soaked in clean water for a few hours, after which seed soaking and sprouting can begin. Some seeds that are bought directly have already been treated at the time of sale with a seed coating containing fungicides and various trace elements. The seed coating agent has a good sterilizing effect, so disinfection is generally not needed.

4. Sprouting

After the treated seeds are rinsed clean, soak them at room temperature for 4-8 hours. Once the seeds have absorbed enough water, drain the water, wrap them in a towel, put them in a container, and place them in an environment at about 25 degrees at room temperature to sprout. During sprouting, stir the seeds frequently so they are heated evenly. They sprout after about 24 hours. When a small portion of the seeds show root tips, the temperature of the sprouting environment can be lowered. After about two days, the sprouts are uniform and sowing can begin.
