High-Yield Fertilization Techniques for Welsh Onions

Welsh onions are a widely grown crop in China, with an extremely broad growing range, especially in the north, where many people make money by growing them. When growing welsh onions, rational fertilization is the key to achieving high yields, so how should welsh onions be fertilized to get a high yield? Come and take a look with the editor.

1. Nutrient Requirements

Welsh onions are a fertilizer-loving crop and, like other vegetable crops, are relatively sensitive to nitrogen. Applying nitrogen fertilizer during cultivation speeds up their growth and has an obvious yield-increasing effect. According to research, producing 3000 kg of welsh onions per mu requires the consumption of 8-10 kg of nitrogen, 1.5-1.8 kg of phosphorus and 9-11 kg of potassium. Welsh onions are relatively sensitive to phosphorus during the seedling stage; a phosphorus deficiency at the seedling stage affects the later yield, and potassium fertilizer application should be strengthened during the white stalk formation stage. Besides nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, calcium, magnesium, boron and manganese also have a certain influence on the growth of welsh onions. When nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are sufficient, additional application of calcium, manganese and boron has an obvious yield-increasing effect.

2. Fertilization Principles

When growing welsh onions, not applying or applying little potassium fertilizer causes soil potassium to drop substantially, leading to an imbalance in the nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium ratio, which in turn intensifies pests and diseases in welsh onions, seriously affecting yield and quality and reducing economic returns. Applying potassium fertilizer can promote the growth of welsh onions and also improve their resistance to pests and diseases. Balanced fertilization has an obvious yield-increasing effect, and can also increase the vitamin C and soluble sugar content of welsh onions while reducing the content of harmful substances such as nitrate.

3. Base Fertilizer

After selecting the growing site, sufficient base fertilizer should be applied in conjunction with land preparation. The fertilization method depends on the fertilizer; generally, when the amount of fertilizer is large, the broadcast application method is used, while when the amount is small, it is applied at the bottom of the planting holes. The fertilizer is generally decomposed or semi-decomposed organic fertilizer. Per mu, 5000-8000 kg of decomposed barnyard manure can be applied; for phosphorus-deficient soil, 25 kg of superphosphate and 150 kg of plant ash can be applied per mu; for potassium-deficient soil, 8-10 kg of potassium sulfate can be applied.

4. Topdressing

After planting, the growth of welsh onions is slow. When they enter the peak growing season, the old leaves turn yellow and dry while new leaves grow continuously; at this time, the aim is to make them produce more leaves and grow leaf sheaths. After the Start of Autumn, topdressing should be done in time: apply 4000 kg of farmyard manure per mu on the ridge backs, or apply 150 kg of cake fertilizer per mu, then shallow hoe and water after fertilizing. After half a month, a second topdressing should be applied: this time, pour 750-1000 kg of manure water per mu, carried out together with earthing up and watering. One month later, apply a third topdressing: 15-25 kg of nitrogen fertilizer per mu; after fertilizing, water and earth up, which can rapidly increase weight.
