Pest and disease control methods for Coptis chinensis

Coptis chinensis is a plant of the genus Coptis in the family Ranunculaceae. Its dried rhizome can be used as medicine, with effects of clearing heat and drying dampness, purging fire and detoxifying, and it also has broad antibacterial action. Because wild resources are scarce, it is mostly cultivated artificially, but in artificial cultivation production, pests and diseases can bring huge economic losses to farmers. Let's take a look at the pest and disease control methods for Coptis chinensis below.

1. Powdery mildew

Also known as winter melon powder, it mainly harms the leaves of Coptis chinensis. When the disease occurs, round or oval brown small spots appear on the back of the leaves, gradually expanding or merging to form large lesions. White powder gradually grows on the lesions, and black small particles appear during the high temperatures of July-August, which can cause the plants to die and wither.

Control methods: Plant at a reasonable density, adjust the ventilation and light transmission between plants, carry out a comprehensive garden cleanup in winter, and burn or deeply bury the withered branches and fallen leaves in a centralized manner. When the disease occurs, lime-sulfur mixture can be sprayed once every week for 2-3 consecutive times.

2. Southern blight

Southern blight mainly occurs in summer and autumn, and mainly harms the rhizome. In the early stage of the disease, there is no obvious change in the aboveground parts. In the later stage of the disease, as the temperature rises, the pathogen extends upward and spreads densely over the soil surface around the rhizome. Tea-brown sclerotia form at the root crown, affecting the nutrient transport of the plant, thereby causing the top shoots to begin to wither and die.

Control methods: Adopt a crop rotation planting method, and it can be rotated with gramineous plants. It is not suitable to rotate with medicinal materials such as Xuanshen and peony. When the disease occurs, lime water irrigation or Tuzet spraying can be used for control. Diseased plants should be promptly pulled out and taken out of the field, and the diseased holes should be disinfected well.

3. Root rot

It generally begins to occur in April-May, and July-August is the peak period. As its name suggests, it is a disease that harms the root system. When the disease occurs, the fibrous roots of the plant begin to turn black-brown, and slowly dry-rot and dry up until they fall off. There are also symptoms in the aboveground parts: irregular purplish-red lesions appear on the leaves and gradually turn dark purplish-red.

Control methods: Pay attention to underground pests during planting to reduce the incidence of disease. When the disease occurs, promptly pull out diseased plants and spread lime powder in the diseased holes for disinfection to prevent the disease from spreading. In the early stage of the disease, Tuzet and Kewensan can be used for control.

4. Anthracnose

It generally begins to occur in early May, and June is the peak period. When the disease occurs, strip-shaped purple spots appear on the leaves, and the lesions can merge with each other, finally causing the leaves to dry up and die.

Control methods: In the early stage of the disease, Bordeaux mixture or mancozeb can be sprayed, with relatively good results.
