A Complete Guide to the Key Points of High-Yield Carrot Cultivation and Management

Key Points for High-Yield Carrot Management

Carrots are one of the most common vegetables we grow, and they are widely planted in rural areas, but few people manage to grow high-yield carrots, because many people do not manage them systematically and simply let them grow naturally. To get a high yield of carrots, there are 4 areas that require particular attention. Let's take a look at them together below.

1. Water control

Carrots love a moist environment, and soil with high moisture can effectively increase carrot yields, so daily watering of carrots must be done diligently. After emergence, keep watering to once every 5-7 days, just enough to moisten the surface soil; before emergence, water about 2-3 times, and the first watering should soak through so the seeds can be fully moistened. Later watering depends on the situation, normally controlled at about three times a month; if the soil is relatively moist, the interval can be appropriately extended, as long as the soil is kept moist for a long time. Sufficient water can extremely quickly promote the swelling of carrots.

2. Fertilizer control

Because carrots grow relatively fast, only sufficient fertilizer can ensure a high yield. The initial base fertilizer must be applied generously, with the amount controlled so that there is 2-3 cm of farmyard manure at the bottom of the pit. Later topdressing is relatively less frequent, so each application must be a bit larger. The first topdressing is about two weeks after emergence, then controlled at about once a month, and fertilization is stopped about 20 days before harvest to avoid excess fertilizer.

3. Weeding

Clearing weeds is an extremely important part of growing carrots, because the probability and speed of weed growth in carrot fields are higher than for many vegetables, so the frequency of clearing is also relatively high. The first time you weed, you need to remove the roots as well and carry them out of the planting area, and loosen the soil a little. For subsequent weeding, you only need to remove the roots; the parts above the roots can be buried in the soil and used as fertilizer. Every time the weeds in the field exceed about 10 cm, a major weeding should be carried out.

4. Temperature control

Growers who plant carrots often cause large-scale death of seedlings because they do not pay attention to temperature, and this is a very cruel fact. So keeping warm has also become a key point for high-yield carrots. In response to this situation, what growers currently use more often is covering with plastic sheeting in the early stage, then opening a hole at each pit after emergence; this can both ensure the growth of carrot seedlings and reduce weed growth to a certain extent. This method is recommended for everyone to start trying once the nighttime temperature drops below 10°.

There are many points to pay attention to if you want a high yield of carrots. If the growing environment in your area is extremely good, then it is recommended that you choose a seedling variety with a relatively fast growth rate, so you can harvest several more times and also achieve a high yield.
