Key Cultivation Techniques and Planting Management Methods for Horseradish
Horseradish is a kind of condiment, but what many people do not realize is that horseradish originally comes from a vegetable. Horseradish is native to Europe and was later gradually introduced to China for cultivation, and it is the base ingredient of horseradish sauce. It is very popular in China, so the planting area of horseradish has also grown larger. So how should horseradish be cultivated? Below, the editor brings you the cultivation techniques for horseradish. Let's take a look together!

1. Seed Selection and Site Selection
First, we should select good horseradish seeds that have no obvious wounds and no pests or diseases, and then choose soil with high terrain, dryness and high fertility as the planting site. Before planting, the land preparation work should be done well first. First, plow the soil deeply to about 35 cm and build ridges for disinfection. Then apply sufficient base fertilizer, which is mainly farmyard manure, combined with a small amount of compound fertilizer. Then plant it on top of the ridge. The planting period for horseradish is relatively long, generally carried out around the Beginning of Spring each year. When sowing, control the sowing density well and ensure sufficient soil moisture. After sowing, cover with about 4 cm of soil and cover well with plastic film.
2. Timely Planting
The planting time for horseradish should be chosen in spring and autumn, because the temperatures in summer and winter are too extreme, which is not conducive to the growth of horseradish. Usually the best planting time is around Qingming Festival each year. Dig the planting holes on top of the ridge, and control the density and depth well. The planting holes should maintain an inclination of about 45 degrees to the ground. After planting, cover with fine soil and smooth and refine the top of the ridge. Spray an appropriate amount of herbicide and cover well with plastic film. The plastic film must be firm, pressed tightly and compacted to prevent it from being blown away by the wind. If planting by sowing, small holes should be made in the plastic film, and then the small holes should be covered with soil, which is beneficial for seed germination and seedling emergence.
3. Thinning and Replanting
If horseradish is sown and planted in spring, under normal management, it will break through the soil in about one month. During the seedling stage, because the pungent taste of the roots has not fully developed yet, the damage from pests and diseases is relatively great. After emergence, we should regularly observe the growth of the seedlings. If weak seedlings or dead seedlings damaged by pests and diseases are found, they should be removed in time, and then healthy horseradish seedlings should be replanted. Also, when the seedlings grow to a certain height, the thinning work should be done well, and then the ridge can be closed to set the seedlings.
4. Fertilization Management
The growth of horseradish has a relatively high demand for fertilizer. When the seedlings grow to about 12 cm, the first topdressing work needs to begin. The fertilizer at this stage is mainly urea, with the purpose of promoting seedling growth and increasing the growth rate. Then comes early summer. Early summer is when horseradish has the strongest growth ability and has a very high demand for nutrients. At this time, nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizers such as urea and potassium sulfate should be applied as topdressing to promote plant leaf growth, strengthen photosynthesis and increase nutrient accumulation.
The above is a brief introduction to horseradish cultivation. Of course, horseradish also has a certain demand for water, especially for those seedlings with relatively weak growth ability and replanted seedlings, which should be watered heavily to improve the survival rate. After the middle stage, there are very few pests and diseases on horseradish, because the pungent taste of horseradish is very strong, and many pests do not like it.
