Pest and Disease Control Methods for Curly Endive

Curly endive has a slightly bitter taste and can be stir-fried or served as a cold salad. It is an excellent choice for clearing heat and reducing internal fire, and because of its heat-clearing and cooling properties, it is highly praised by consumers in the market. As market demand for it grows, its planting area has been increasing year by year, but the severity of pest and disease damage to curly endive has also risen accordingly. So what pests and diseases affect curly endive during cultivation? Let's take a look at the control methods.

1. Downy mildew

Downy mildew is a fungal disease that mainly damages the leaves. The pathogen overwinters in diseased plant residues and soil, and after the following year, the pathogen germinates and causes disease. When the disease occurs, irregular chlorotic or pale yellow lesions appear on the leaves, and a white downy mold layer appears on the underside of the leaves. As the disease progresses, the lesions expand, causing the leaves to wither and die. In severe cases, all the leaves of the plant wither and die, making them unusable and causing great losses.

Control methods: Before planting, clean up diseased plant residues in the field, and also disinfect and sterilize the soil to thoroughly eliminate overwintering pathogens. When the disease occurs, spray with Kailu and Saidfu preparations for control, spraying once every 7-10 days, for 2-3 consecutive times.

2. Viral disease

Viral disease, as the name suggests, is a viral disease that can harm the entire plant. After onset, the plant becomes stunted, the leaves are small and uneven in color, and it is noticeably shorter than normally growing plants. It is mainly spread by virus-carrying seeds and aphids, and occurs mainly during periods of high temperature, little rain, and drought.

Control methods: When sowing, treat the seeds with a seed dressing agent to eliminate viruses carried by the seeds. During cultivation, keep the soil moist and water appropriately, neither too much nor too little. Remove diseased plants promptly and carry them out of the field. When the disease occurs, spray preparations for control, and at the same time control aphids well to cut off the transmission route.

3. Brown rot

Brown rot can harm both seedlings and mature plants. In seedlings, it mainly affects the root and stem base, causing the seedling root system to turn brown and constrict, ultimately leading to death. When mature plants are infected, the root and stem base turn brown and rot, causing the plant to wilt. In humid environments, a white spiderweb-like mold appears at the affected area.

Control methods: Treat the seeds before sowing, and after dressing with Procymidone, sow them. Choose a plot with flat terrain, loose soil, and good drainage for planting. In the early stage of the disease, spray with preparations such as thiophanate-methyl, difenoconazole, and vinclozolin for control.

4. Aphids

Aphids are a pest of many crops. They gather in groups on curly endive leaves and continuously suck sap. In severe cases, they cause the leaves to shrink and wither, affecting the edibility of the leaves. In addition, they are also vectors for other diseases.

Control methods: Use preparations such as Keyaxing, pirimicarb, and fenvalerate for control, and alternate their use to prevent aphids from developing resistance and affecting control effectiveness.
