Off-Season Vegetable Cultivation Methods

Off-season vegetable cultivation refers to a planting technique of either producing ahead of schedule or delaying production. It is a very popular cultivation technique on the market today, as it can ensure that most vegetable varieties can be supplied and marketed all year round. However, because off-season planting can destroy the nutrients in vegetables, some people still cannot accept it. So what are the off-season vegetable cultivation methods? Let us take a look together below.

1. Early-maturing cultivation

Early-maturing cultivation generally refers to a method of planting when the normal planting time has not yet been reached and the planting conditions are not suitable. It mainly uses protective equipment to carry out heat preservation, or cold protection work, and transplants seedlings ahead of time to promote the growth and development of vegetable plants, so that they can be harvested and marketed as early as possible. Vegetables marketed in this way are generally called early-maturing varieties.

2. Delayed cultivation

Delayed cultivation mainly refers to a method of sowing in summer; vegetables that could originally be harvested in winter are planted in autumn using protective equipment, allowing production to be delayed. It can extend the growth cycle of vegetables, thereby extending the supply period of such vegetables.

3. Hot-summer cultivation

Summer weather is generally relatively hot, and rainfall is also relatively heavy, which is what people often call a hot and rainy climate. Many vegetables basically cannot be planted in summer, but now we can use the method of building shade sheds to cool down and prevent rain, so as to achieve the purpose of regulating the external environment and carry out off-season planting of vegetables.

4. Overwintering cultivation

Overwintering cultivation and hot-summer cultivation actually use opposite principles to produce a cultivation method. Generally, windproof sheds, plastic sheds, and the like are used to achieve a heat preservation effect, thereby planting some vegetables that are not very cold-resistant in winter, and these vegetables can safely overwinter under protective equipment, and by spring they can be marketed early. Vegetables such as spinach, Chinese chives, and cilantro can all be planted.

5. Forcing cultivation

Forcing cultivation is actually a planting method very similar to overwintering cultivation. In cold weather, it uses greenhouse planting methods and other heating equipment to raise the temperature in the greenhouse and promote the rapid growth of vegetables, thereby achieving the purpose of marketing. This off-season cultivation method causes more serious damage to the nutrients in vegetables than overwintering cultivation.

6. Blanching cultivation

Many people may not understand the method of blanching cultivation, because it is not particularly common in our lives. It mainly uses blanching rooms or other blanching methods to promote certain specific vegetables to form soft, etiolated organs in a specific environment. This can allow many vegetables to be marketed all year round, such as scallions, ginger, and garlic.

The above are the six cultivation methods for off-season vegetables, among which early-maturing cultivation and delayed cultivation are currently the most commonly used on the market. Although off-season cultivated vegetables allow people to eat the vegetables they want in every season, many nutrients are destroyed, so they are not very healthy vegetables. But their emergence naturally also has its necessity.
