How to grow Polygonatum to achieve high yields? A detailed explanation of the key cultivation techniques

High-yield Polygonatum cultivation techniques

Polygonatum is a medicinal herb with relatively high medicinal value and is very suitable for large-scale cultivation by farmers. The environment it needs to grow is also fairly common, and the later management requirements are not high either, making it a good option for rural areas today. So how can you get Polygonatum to achieve the goal of high yield? Let's learn about it together below.

1. Site selection and preparation

Polygonatum prefers a relatively shady and damp environment, so when choosing a site, farmers can give priority to some hillside positions that do not face the sun. Carry out tilling about 2 weeks before transplanting the seedlings, and the grass roots and the like should be cleared away thoroughly. One week after tilling, mix in organic fertilizer for soil enrichment, with the amount controlled at just 3000-4000 jin per mu. When planting, level the land into strips about 1.5 m wide, with each strip spaced about 20 cm apart, to facilitate drainage and daily management.

2. Seedling and seed management

Polygonatum seeds take a relatively long time to break dormancy, so when breaking dormancy, a dedicated nursery bed needs to be built for raising the seedlings. Prepare sandy soil with relatively good water permeability, then choose seeds, moisten them with water, and place them about 10 cm into the sand; they can be placed a bit deeper to achieve a heat-preserving effect. The nursery bed should be watered regularly to keep it in a relatively moist state. After about 4-6 months, the seeds will basically have finished breaking dormancy, and you can prepare to start the planting work.

3. Field management

Once the seeds have sprouted, field management should begin. In the early stage, the main focus is on two aspects: fertilizer and water, and protection from strong light. Some base fertilizer needs to be prepared at the base of the seedlings. After planting the seedlings, control watering to once a week according to the degree of soil moisture, continuing for about one month, and then make preparations for shading. Begin weeding about one month after sprouting, and afterward control it to weeding once every 2-3 months. Start topdressing after the first weeding, and control it to once every one and a half months or two months according to growth conditions.

4. Disease and pest prevention

In the later stages of Polygonatum cultivation, there is not much that needs to be managed, so at this point farmers should focus on disease prevention. The first problem that is relatively likely to appear in its growing environment is root rot, which is mostly caused by farmers watering excessively in daily care. Here the editor reminds farmers that watering should still be based on the actual degree of soil moisture; you do not necessarily have to water according to a fixed schedule. Its symptoms are a tendency for the plant to wither and black rot at the roots, and it can be treated with metalaxyl and hymexazol. Another is leaf spot disease, which causes abnormal leaves, and it can be prevented and controlled with zineb wettable powder. If the problem is a pest such as white grubs, trichlorfon can be used for prevention and control.

The above are techniques that can, to a certain extent, increase Polygonatum yields. You can refer to the above growing conditions for cultivation, but you should also cultivate according to your own actual growing situation. Our goal is for Polygonatum to achieve high yields.
