How to grow Tetrastigma hemsleyanum

Tetrastigma hemsleyanum, also known as three-leaf rock vine (Tetrastigma hemsleyanum), has its whole plant and whole herb used as medicine. It is one of the commonly used Chinese herbal medicines among the people, with antiviral, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and blood-activating and stasis-removing effects. Because its toxic side effects are small, it is also called plant antibiotic. In recent years, wild Tetrastigma hemsleyanum resources have decreased, while market demand has gradually increased, and prices have also multiplied, so artificial cultivation of Tetrastigma hemsleyanum is urgent. So how should Tetrastigma hemsleyanum be grown? Let's take a look.

1. Site selection and land preparation

Choose a plot with deep soil layers, loose and fertile soil, rich in organic matter, and good drainage as the seedling-raising site, prepare the land and make beds. When preparing the land, fertilizer can be applied. Tetrastigma hemsleyanum is a shade-loving plant, so shade facilities should be set up well. The choice of woodland is also extremely important. During growth, Tetrastigma hemsleyanum likes dappled light, so it is advisable to choose a slightly acidic shady woodland with loose, fertile soil and good drainage. After selection, clear away weeds and shrubs completely, deep plow 30-40cm, break up and rake level the soil clods, remove debris, and make beds according to the terrain.

2. Propagation

Tetrastigma hemsleyanum has three propagation methods: cuttings, seed tubers, and tissue-cultured seedlings. Among them, cutting propagation is mainly used in production. In spring and autumn, select robust plants free from pests and diseases as mother plants, cut their vines into 15-20cm cuttings, and require each cutting to have 2-3 axillary buds. Insert the cuttings obliquely into the seedling-raising site, with one axillary bud of each cutting exposed above the ground, press the soil firmly by hand, then water to keep the soil moist. After about two months, they can survive.

3. Planting

The seedlings that survive cutting propagation can be transplanted, generally after two months of seedling raising. Choose a day with a temperature above 20 degrees for transplanting, so as not to let low temperatures affect the survival rate of transplanting. Open holes on the bed surface for planting, requiring each plant to maintain a plant-row spacing of 20×30cm, set them upright into the holes, and spread the root system out without twisting it together. Cover with soil and press firmly, then water thoroughly to settle the roots and improve the survival rate.

4. Field management

After planting, carry out manual weeding so that it grows in a loose, aerated environment. Each time you weed, be careful not to damage the root system or the plants. When weeding, remove every weed you see. Manual weeding is recommended, and chemical agents are not recommended, so as to avoid phytotoxicity. In order to make Tetrastigma hemsleyanum grow well, an appropriate amount of plant ash can be applied, which can effectively promote the growth of its axillary buds and also help prevent leaf drop, prevent pests and diseases, and sterilize. Tetrastigma hemsleyanum is a climbing vine plant. When the vines grow to a certain extent, set up supports to guide the vines and help them climb up trees.
