Burdock Planting Methods

Burdock, also known as dalizi and tree root vegetable, is rich in crude fiber, protein and various nutrients. Its root can also be used as medicine, making it a vegetable for both medicinal and culinary use, and it is deeply loved by people. So do you know how burdock should be planted? Come and take a look at its planting methods with the editor.

1. Land selection and soil preparation

Burdock prefers a light-abundant, warm and humid environment, is relatively tolerant of heat and cold, and is suitable for growing in deep, well-drained fertile soil, with soil rich in organic matter being the most ideal. Burdock avoids continuous cropping, and the previous crop is best as rapeseed, broad bean or other such crops. Before planting, in combination with soil preparation, apply 3000-4000 kg of farmyard manure, 50 of superphosphate and an appropriate amount of compound fertilizer per mu. Mix it into the soil together with plowing, then harrow finely and level.

2. Sowing

Burdock generally uses seed propagation. Select seeds that are plump and free of pests and diseases, soak them in warm water for one day, then place them in a warm place and rinse once a day until the seeds sprout white, then they can be sown. Sowing includes hole sowing and drill sowing. For drill sowing, open a shallow furrow 2-3 cm deep at a row spacing of 60 cm, evenly scatter the seeds into the furrow, and then cover with soil. For hole sowing, dig holes at a plant-row spacing of 30×60 cm, generally sowing about 5 seeds per hole, cover with soil and press lightly after sowing, then cover with soil to retain moisture.

3. Field management

After the seeds emerge, remove the covering grass on cloudy days or in the evening. But when the seedlings grow to 2-3 leaves, thin them in time. For drill sowing, leave one plant at a plant spacing of 4-5, and for hole sowing, leave 2 plants per hole; any excess can be transplanted or pulled out. When the seedlings grow to 4-5 leaves, final thinning should be done in time. For drill sowing, leave one plant at a plant spacing of 30 cm, while for hole sowing, leave one plant per hole. During thinning, carry out intertillage and weeding. Burdock grows relatively slowly, and if there are many weeds, it will affect growth and may even lead to death, so intertillage and weeding are extremely important. During the entire growth period, intertillage and weeding should be carried out 4-5 times.

4. Fertilizer and water management

If you want burdock to grow quickly, fertilization is indispensable. In April of the second year after sowing, apply 1000 kg of farmyard manure and 15 kg of diammonium phosphate per mu as topdressing, spread them on the ground, and turn them into the soil in combination with intertillage. During the flowering period, spray potassium dihydrogen phosphate foliar fertilizer per mu, which can promote flowering and fruiting. Water in time during drought, and drain in time during the rainy season to avoid excessive water accumulation causing root rot.
