A detailed guide to planting Bupleurum and precautions
Bupleurum is a key antipyretic herb commonly used to reduce fever, relieve pain and promote bile flow. It can also be used to treat colds with fever, respiratory infections and other illnesses. It is mainly divided into northern Bupleurum, Yinzhou Bupleurum, black Bupleurum, red-purple Bupleurum and cone-leaf Bupleurum. In China it is mainly produced in the northwest and the southwestern plateau regions. So how is Bupleurum grown? And what needs attention during the growing process? Let's take a look at what today's editor is sharing.

1. Land cultivation
Based on the growth habits of Bupleurum, we can choose a suitable planting site for it. Generally, we choose sandy soil that is fertile, loose in texture, good in permeability, well-drained and convenient to irrigate. Saline-alkali land and heavy clay land cannot be used to grow Bupleurum. Deeply plow the soil and spread sufficient farmyard manure, using it together with phosphate fertilizer as a base fertilizer. Open furrows and make beds, level the ground, and then planting can begin.
2. Scientific planting
Bupleurum can generally be planted in either spring or winter, but the best time to plant is winter. Planted this way, the survival rate and the later yield are both about 20 percent higher. Before sowing, we need to place the seeds in warm water at about 50 degrees to scald them; after about ten minutes, remove the seeds and soak them in a carbendazim solution for about half an hour. After removing them, rinse them clean with water, let the moisture dry, and then they can be sown.
3. Field operations
The emergence of Bupleurum seedlings is related to some degree to soil temperature and soil moisture. In a suitable environment, seedlings generally emerge in about half a month, but if the moisture is not up to standard, it generally takes two to three months for seedlings to emerge. After the Bupleurum seedlings emerge, we should strengthen field management operations, water in a timely manner, fertilize scientifically, and at the same time carry out reasonable hoeing and weeding. When the seedlings grow to about 15 cm, we should maintain the field density at this point, generally keeping the spacing between plants at about 25 cm.
4. Pest and disease control
The main disease of Bupleurum is root rot, which mainly occurs in hot and rainy seasons. First, we need to strengthen field management and do a good job of drainage in a timely manner. Then we can also increase the application of phosphate fertilizer and potassium fertilizer to enhance the resistance of the plants. The most common insect pest of Bupleurum is aphids, and we can control them directly with dimethoate or trichlorfon.
5. Precautions
Bupleurum is a commonly used Chinese medicinal herb, so there are many things to pay attention to when planting it. For example, in the aspect of pest and disease control, we generally still need to strengthen field management work to achieve the effect of preventing pests and diseases, and it is best not to spray pesticides, as this will have a certain impact on the medicinal quality. Second, we should do a good job of moisture retention; after sowing, cover with a layer of rice straw, which can effectively retain moisture. Finally, use chemical fertilizers as little as possible or not at all, and mainly rely on farmyard manure.
