How to Plant Trichosanthes Root

Trichosanthes root is one of the bulk commonly used Chinese medicinal materials in China, also known as Gualou root. Its root system can be used as medicine, with effects of clearing heat and purging fire, promoting fluid production and quenching thirst, draining pus and reducing swelling. It is the main raw material for Chinese patent medicines treating diabetes, so the market demand for it is growing larger and larger, and artificial cultivation is developing extremely rapidly. Below is an introduction to the planting methods of Trichosanthes root.

1. Land Selection and Preparation

Trichosanthes root prefers warm, humid, ventilated and well-lit environments, fears waterlogging and drought, and is not cold-tolerant. When planting, soil with deep soil layers and loose, fertile texture is required. When planting, select plots that meet the conditions. After choosing the planting site, clear away weeds and residual plant debris, then in combination with plowing, apply 2000-3000 jin of farmyard manure and 50-80 kg of compound fertilizer per mu, rake it fine and level it, make beds and wait for planting.

2. Propagation Methods

The propagation methods of Trichosanthes root include seed propagation, root division propagation and vine layering propagation. In large-scale production, seed propagation is generally used. The sowing time is chosen between Qingming and Guyu. Before sowing, soak the seeds in warm water at about 40 degrees for one day. After soaking, absorb and remove them, dry them slightly and wait for sowing. Sowing adopts the method of hole sowing, opening holes at a plant-to-row spacing of 12×20cm for spot sowing, placing 1-2 seeds in each hole, covering with soil and watering. Before emergence, keep the soil moist continuously, controlling humidity at about 20%, and seedlings will emerge after about 15-20 days.

3. Field Management

After emergence, field management should be strengthened. The first thing to do is loosen the soil and remove weeds to ensure that no weeds in the field affect the growth of seedlings. After the seedlings are uniform, carry out timely intertillage to promote root growth. Water to keep the soil moist and speed up seedling growth. When the seedlings grow to about 50cm, apply fertilizer 2 times, applying 10 kg of urea per mu each time. When fertilizing, note that the fertilizer should be placed 20-30cm from the roots, and water immediately after fertilizing, so as to avoid excessive fertilizer causing seedling burn.

4. Diseases and Pests

The diseases of Trichosanthes root are mainly leaf spot disease, root rot and root-knot nematode disease. Leaf spot disease generally occurs from June to September; when it occurs, spray Bordeaux mixture and mancozeb for control. Root rot mainly occurs in May and is more serious during the rainy season. When it occurs, promptly remove diseased plants and disinfect the diseased holes. Root-knot nematode disease mainly harms the root system, so prevention should be given priority. When planting, plow the soil multiple times, combine soil sunning with chemical disinfection and insect killing, strengthen field management, and increase the application of organic fertilizer. The main pest is the white grub, which is the larva of the scarab beetle and mainly harms the root system. It can be controlled by manual capture or chemical insect killing.
