Growing conditions for Polygonatum odoratum

Polygonatum odoratum is a perennial herb of the Liliaceae family. Its rhizome can be used medicinally and has the effects of nourishing yin and moistening the lungs, benefiting the stomach and promoting fluid production, and it can lower blood sugar, blood lipids and blood pressure. It is one of the medicinal materials commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine, and its wild resources are gradually decreasing, so artificial cultivation has risen. However, it has certain requirements for the growing environment. Let's take a look at the detailed introduction below.

1. Growing environment

Wild Polygonatum odoratum generally grows in areas at an altitude of 300-1500 m, while if it is artificially cultivated, it must be planted in areas above 900 m in altitude, so as to prevent the climate from affecting its growth. In addition, there should be no factories near the planting site, because Polygonatum odoratum is relatively sensitive to smoke, and if there is a large-scale [facility] nearby, it will affect its growth.

2. Soil

Polygonatum odoratum likes sandy soil, and requires the soil to be fertile, loose and well drained, but sandy soil is generally low in fertility. If it is yellow clay, it tends to harden when dry, making harvesting relatively difficult, but its water and fertilizer retention is strong, and when sufficient base fertilizer is applied, high-quality Polygonatum odoratum can be grown, but it is not suitable for planting. Plots where herbicides have been used for a long time cannot be planted; soil that is too heavy and sticky is not suitable for planting; soil that is too loose and has no granular structure gives lower yields; soil with many gravel stones is not suitable for planting.

3. Temperature

Polygonatum odoratum also has relatively high temperature requirements. It is drought tolerant, but its seeds need a temperature of about 25°C to break dormancy and begin to germinate. When emerging, it needs a temperature of 9-12°C; when budding and flowering, it should be kept at 18-22°C; and when the underground rhizome is expanding, it needs a temperature of 19-25°C. In autumn, when the temperature is below 20°C, the fruit gradually matures and the aboveground parts grow slowly.

4. Water

Water is extremely important for the growth of Polygonatum odoratum. Generally, when the monthly average precipitation is 200 mm, it is the period when its underground rhizome grows fastest, and when the precipitation is less than 20 mm, its growth will slow down or stop. When watering during planting, it is not suitable to use sulfur water, slag-filtered water or livestock farm wastewater, as they will affect plant growth and, in severe cases, cause plant death.
