Ginger seed prices and growing methods

Ginger, also known as white ginger, Sichuan ginger and so on, is a perennial herbaceous plant of the genus Zingiber in the ginger family. It originated in the tropical regions of Southeast Asia and is widely cultivated in the central, southeastern and southwestern provinces and regions of China. The large ginger produced in Anqiu, Shandong, Changyi, Shandong, Laiwu, Shandong, and Dazeshan, Pingdu, Shandong is especially well known. Now let us take a look at ginger seed prices and growing methods!

How much is a jin of ginger seeds?

The price of ginger seeds is about 8 to 12 yuan per jin, but prices vary depending on seed quality, variety, place of origin and the market. Ginger is not propagated by seed, but by vegetative propagation using ginger rhizomes. After a ginger rhizome is planted, several adventitious roots emerge from the base of the young shoot, and several small lateral roots form on them. After entering the vigorous growth period, several fleshy roots also emerge from the mother ginger and daughter ginger, and these fleshy roots also have a certain absorbing capacity. The seed rate is about 800 to 1000 jin per mu.

What varieties of ginger are there?

1. Lu Ginger No. 1: "Lu Ginger No. 1" is a high-quality, high-yield new variety bred after treating "Laiwu Large Ginger" with Co-60 gamma ray irradiation. It has excellent high-yield and stable-yield performance, with an average single-plant ginger rhizome weight of 1 kg and a fresh ginger yield of 5300 kg per mu.

2. Shannong Large Ginger No. 1: A new ginger variety with large ginger rhizomes and high single-plant yield, bred by Shandong Agricultural University. The ginger buds are plump, the commercial traits are good, the pungency is moderate, and the cold resistance is strong. The general yield is 6000 kg per mu, and high-yield fields can reach 7500 kg.

3. Laiwu Large Ginger: A local variety from Laiwu City, Shandong Province. The plant is tall and grows vigorously, generally 80 to 90 cm tall. The rhizome weight per plant is 350 to 450 g, and the usual yield is about 2000 kg per mu, while high-yield fields can reach 3500 kg.

4. Tongling White Ginger: A local variety from the Tongling area of Anhui Province, relatively commonly cultivated in Anhui Province. The pungency is medium, the quality is good, the rhizome weight per plant is 450 to 650 g, and the yield is 1000 kg per mu, with a maximum of 2400 kg.

5. Sichuan Bamboo Root Ginger: A local variety from Sichuan. The plant is about 70 cm tall, the rhizome is irregularly palm-shaped, the flesh is crisp and tender, with few fibers and excellent quality. The rhizome weight per plant generally reaches 250 to 500 g, and the yield is about 2500 kg per mu.

Ginger cultivation conditions

1. Temperature: Ginger originated in the tropical regions of Southeast Asia and likes a warm, humid climate. Its cold resistance and drought resistance are relatively weak, and the plant can only grow during the frost-free period. The most suitable temperature for growth is 25 to 28 degrees C, and when the temperature is below 20 degrees C, germination is slow.

2. Light: Ginger is shade-tolerant but not tolerant of strong sunlight, and it has no strict requirement for day length. Therefore, when cultivating it, a shade shed should be built or intercropped plants should be used for appropriate shading to avoid exposure to strong sunlight.

3. Water: The root system of ginger is not well developed, and its drought tolerance and waterlogging tolerance are poor, so its water requirements are especially particular. During the growth period, soil that is too dry or too wet is unfavorable to the growth and expansion of the ginger rhizome and can easily cause disease and rot.

4. Soil: Ginger likes fertile, loose loam or sandy loam. It grows poorly when planted in heavy, wet low-lying land, and it also grows poorly in barren land with poor water retention. It has the greatest need for potassium fertilizer, followed by nitrogen fertilizer, and the least need for phosphorus fertilizer.

Ginger sowing methods

1. Sowing time: The sowing time for ginger is generally from late April to early May, with harvest before frost. Because ginger likes warmth and is not tolerant of cold or frost, it must be cultivated in the warm, frost-free season, and sowing should be done on clear, warm days.

2. Selecting superior seed ginger: After harvesting ginger, select ginger rhizomes that are plump, have full buds, uniform size, bright color, no pests or diseases, no rot, no damage and have not been frozen, and store them as seed ginger.

3. Disinfection and sprouting: Before sowing ginger, soak it in a 500-fold dilution of 50% carbendazim for disinfection, then sun-dry it for 2 to 3 days. When the surface of the ginger rhizome becomes shiny, it can be piled up, covered with rice straw and kept warm to promote sprouting. When the ginger buds grow to 1 cm, they can be sown.

4. Applying sufficient base fertilizer: Ginger has a relatively long growth period, so sufficient base fertilizer should be applied. When preparing the land, use 3000 kg of decomposed organic fertilizer and 25 kg of potassium fertilizer per mu as base fertilizer. When sowing, use 15 kg of urea and 25 kg of compound fertilizer per mu as seed fertilizer.

5. Sowing time: The sowing time for ginger depends on the location. Where irrigation conditions are good, the temperature is high and sprouting is not promoted, sow at Awakening of Insects. Where there are no irrigation conditions, the temperature is low and sprouting needs to be promoted, sow around Qingming or Grain Rain.

6. Sowing density: The sowing density of ginger is generally about 5500 plants per mu, and the seed rate is 800 to 1000 kg per mu. The larger the seed ginger, the earlier the emergence, the stronger the seedlings and the higher the yield, so the seed pieces should be as large as possible.

Ginger growing methods

1. Cultivation and weeding: Ginger is generally cultivated 1 to 2 times after emergence in combination with watering, and weeds should be removed promptly. During the vigorous growth period, the plants gradually close the rows, and the amount of weeds decreases, so manual pulling can be used for weeding. For pollution-free ginger production, it is best not to use herbicides.

2. Timely watering: Ginger is not tolerant of drought, nor of waterlogging, and has strict water requirements. During the growth period, it is appropriate to keep the soil moist. During the high-temperature period in summer, it should be watered promptly to lower the temperature, and on rainy days, field water should be drained promptly to reduce the occurrence of ginger blast.

3. Reasonable topdressing: When ginger seedlings are 30 cm tall, apply 20 kg of urea per mu, or use clear manure water to irrigate the seedlings. Around the Beginning of Autumn, apply 50 kg of compound fertilizer and 25 kg of potassium sulfate per mu. When the underground rhizome expands, apply 10 to 15 kg of urea and 15 to 20 kg of potassium sulfate per mu.

4. Timely earthing up: The rhizome of ginger grows in the soil and requires darkness and moisture, so earthing up is needed. Generally, after the Beginning of Autumn, in combination with weed pulling and fertilization, earth up 2 to 3 times, gradually turning the sowing furrow into a ridge to prevent the rhizome from being exposed above the ground.

5. Shading and cooling: Ginger is a plant that likes shade and is not tolerant of high temperatures or strong light, so shading should be carried out during the summer growth period to promote growth. There are many shading methods, such as building a shed for shade, or intercropping with the tall crop corn.

6. Pest and disease control: When ginger rot occurs, pull out the diseased plants, dig out the pathogen-bearing soil, spread lime in the diseased holes, and fill them with clean, sterile soil. For leaf spot disease, spray with a 500-fold dilution of 50% chlorothalonil every 7 to 10 days. For ginger borers and ginger maggots, use trichlorfon or phoxim for control.
