Notopterygium Planting Techniques and Management Methods

Notopterygium, also known as Qiangqing, Protector of Qiang Envoy, Hu Wang Envoy, etc., is a perennial herbaceous plant of the genus Notopterygium in the Apiaceae family. It is produced in Shaanxi, Sichuan, Gansu, Qinghai, Tibet and other places, and often grows at an altitude of 2000-4000 m in forest edges and shrubs. It has extremely high cultivation value and medicinal value. Let us take a look at the planting techniques of Notopterygium below!
Growth Habits of Notopterygium
Notopterygium is produced in Shaanxi, Sichuan, Gansu, Qinghai, Tibet and other places, and grows at an altitude of 2000-4000 m in forest edges and shrubs. It prefers a cool and humid climate, is cold-tolerant, and slightly shade-tolerant. It is suitable for cultivation in sandy loam soil with deep, loose, well-drained soil rich in humus, and should not be planted in low-lying wet areas. It is propagated by seeds or rhizomes.
Propagation Techniques of Notopterygium
1. Seed propagation: Harvest mature seeds in autumn, dry them in the sun, and sow them directly after the soil thaws in spring. Open holes at a row spacing of 33 cm and a hole spacing of 23-27 cm, with a depth of 5-7 cm. Sow more than 10 seeds per hole, cover with compost or humus soil about 1-2 cm, and water. Use about 15 kg of seeds per hectare.
2. Rhizome propagation: Conduct in autumn or spring at harvest. Select rhizomes with buds, cut them into small sections, with 1-2 buds per section. Plant in strips. Open furrows at a row spacing of 33 cm, with a furrow depth of 15-17 cm and a width of 15 cm. Place the rhizomes horizontally in the furrow, placing 1 section every 8-10 cm, cover with farmyard manure or fine soil 14-16 cm, and water.
Planting Techniques of Notopterygium
1. Land preparation and fertilization: For Notopterygium planting, choose fields with high terrain and good drainage, and carry out intensive cultivation. Apply 3000 kg of farmyard manure, 20 kg of urea, and 50 kg of phosphorus-potassium fertilizer per mu, then wait for sowing or transplanting rhizomes.
2. Intertillage and weeding: After the Notopterygium seedlings emerge uniformly, attention should be paid to intertillage and weeding. Water in dry weather to preserve soil moisture, and drain promptly in rainy weather.
3. Reasonable fertilization: Apply topdressing to Notopterygium once around the Beginning of Autumn, with 10 kg of urea and 10 kg of potassium dihydrogen phosphate per mu. After cleaning the field in winter, spread a layer of farmyard manure.
4. Flower picking and bud removal: After Notopterygium buds, except for plants retained for seed, the flower buds should be removed to prevent nutrient consumption.
5. Pest and disease control: Notopterygium has relatively few diseases. If found, control them by conventional methods. The main pest is the yellow swallowtail butterfly larva, which bites and eats the leaves. Use pyrethroid pesticides to kill them during control. For underground pests, use phoxim to kill them.
6. Harvesting and processing: Notopterygium is generally harvested in autumn 2-3 years after sowing, after the aboveground stems and leaves wither. Remove the reed head from the dug-out underground rhizomes of Notopterygium, clean off the soil, and dry in the sun or dry by heat before selling as medicine. The yield per mu is 300 kg.
