Key management points for the fruiting period of wood ear mushrooms

Wood ear mushroom, also known as rough wood ear, yellow-backed wood ear, etc., has nutritional value similar to that of black wood ear, and is a wood ear variety relatively popular among consumers on the market. When cultivating wood ear mushrooms, the fruiting period is extremely important. Only through scientific management can high and excellent yields of wood ear mushrooms be achieved, maximizing economic benefits. So how should the fruiting period of wood ear mushrooms be managed? Below, Qinnong Network introduces its fruiting management techniques.

1. Control temperature

During the fruiting of wood ear mushrooms, the growth temperature should be controlled between 16-35°C. Too high or too low will affect the growth of the ear pieces. If the temperature is below 16°C, the ear pieces grow slowly; if above 35°C, the growth of the ear pieces is inhibited. The most suitable temperature is 24-28°C. Within this temperature range, the ear pieces grow extremely fast. In addition, when the temperature is below 20°C, reduce ventilation to allow the indoor temperature to rise, while when it is above 33°C, strengthen ventilation and water spraying to bring the temperature down.

2. Increase humidity

Wood ear mushrooms grow on decaying wood in the wild, so they also require relatively high air humidity. During the growth stage, air humidity should be maintained between 85-95%. If the humidity is insufficient, manual water spraying can be used to maintain it. When spraying water, water can also be sprayed directly on the ear pieces, but the main focus is still spraying water on the ground and into the air. Water spraying should be determined according to climate and weather. When the weather is clear and the temperature is relatively high, the amount of water sprayed should be greater and the frequency higher, while on cloudy and rainy days and when the temperature is low, spray less water or do not spray water. When the edges of the ear pieces turn black and hard, it indicates insufficient air humidity, and at this time watering and spraying should be carried out.

3. Strengthen lighting

The intensity and duration of light have a relatively large relationship with the quality of wood ear mushrooms. During the mycelium growth stage of wood ear mushrooms, light is not needed, but during the ear piece growth stage, a certain amount of scattered light is required. If light is insufficient, the color of the ear pieces is dull and the downy hairs are short and fine; if light is sufficient, the ear pieces are dark in color and the downy hairs are long and thick. Therefore, during the ear piece growth period, lighting should be strengthened to produce high-quality wood ear mushrooms and meet market demand.

4. Maintain ventilation

During the ear piece growth period, wood ear mushrooms need to absorb a large amount of oxygen and release carbon dioxide. If the indoor environment has poor ventilation, the air does not circulate, causing a relatively high concentration of carbon dioxide indoors, so the ear pieces cannot grow and differentiate normally, ultimately resulting in poor development. Moreover, in the later stage of ear piece growth, a high-temperature and high-humidity environment can cause the phenomenon of ear shedding, so ventilation should be strengthened even more to keep the air fresh.

5. Harvest management

Under normal management, wood ear mushrooms can be harvested 3-4 times a year, among which the first and second harvests are of better quality, and the quality after the third harvest is poorer. After the first harvest, the remaining ear bases should be removed completely in time to avoid mold and rot, which can lead to contamination and make further fruiting impossible. After one harvest, stop spraying water, strengthen ventilation, and strengthen lighting so that the mycelium continues to absorb nutrients in the bag, providing strong mycelium conditions for the second fruiting.
