How to Grow Spaghetti Squash

Spaghetti squash is a relatively rare, high-quality squash in China. It is a variant variety of zucchini, and both the young squash and the mature squash can be eaten. Spaghetti squash is still rather uncommon on the Chinese market. Although it can be grown in all parts of China, it has not been widely accepted by people. At present, the bidding value of spaghetti squash on the market is considerable, so quite a few people are asking online: how do you grow spaghetti squash? So today, the editor will give everyone a brief introduction to the planting method of spaghetti squash.

1. Field preparation

Spaghetti squash has strong adaptability to the environment. Generally, any soil that can be used to grow pumpkins, zucchini and other cucurbits can be used to grow spaghetti squash. The next thing is that the land preparation method is also similar to growing zucchini: plow deep and level the ground low, clean the impurities in the field thoroughly, disinfect and kill insects, then spread sufficient farmyard manure or organic fertilizer, and you can open furrows and get ready for sowing.

2. Sowing method

There are generally two methods of sowing spaghetti squash, namely direct sowing and seedling transplanting. The planting time is generally around February each year. For direct sowing, you usually dig holes at a certain density, then sow three to four seeds in each hole, and finally cover with soil to bury the seeds. For seedling transplanting, you also need to prepare a seedbed, then evenly scatter the seeds on the seedbed, and finally pat the seeds gently into the soil, cover with a layer of rice straw and wait for them to sprout.

3. Thinning and filling in seedlings

When the spaghetti squash seedlings grow to about 10 to 12 cm, you can carry out thinning, transplanting and filling in of seedlings. Generally, only two seedlings are left in each hole; the extra seedlings can be pulled out and used for transplanting or filling in gaps. When the squash seedlings grow to about 20 cm, set them in place at a density of 1.5 m between rows and 1 m between plants.

4. Fertilizing and trellising

After setting the plants in place, two things need to be done, namely fertilizing and trellising. About four to five days after setting in place, fertilization is needed, mainly nitrogen fertilizer applied in holes, or you can use manure and urine water for irrigation. After a week, set up a support under each spaghetti squash seedling, then use rope to guide the seedling onto the support to grow. This can not only reduce disease but also enhance the airiness of the field and increase the yield of spaghetti squash. During the growing period of the spaghetti squash seedlings, generally about two to three growth fertilizer applications are needed. Then there is fertilization before flowering and after fruit set, mainly with potassium fertilizer and phosphorus fertilizer.

5. Weeding and watering

When the squash seedlings grow to about 30 cm, carry out one intertillage and weeding. When weeding, be gentle and do not damage the roots of the squash seedlings. Generally, if there is no rainfall within one to two days after setting in place, then a moderate amount of watering is needed. Next is the later watering, which needs to be decided according to the water needs of the squash seedlings. Also note that when there is a lot of rain, drainage must be timely to avoid waterlogging in the field, which can cause disease.

6. Pest and disease control

Spaghetti squash has strong disease resistance and very few pests and diseases. The most common diseases are viral disease and powdery mildew. For viral disease, we can use ningnanmycin aqueous solution for treatment, while powdery mildew is generally controlled with flusilazole. The main pest is aphids, which we can kill with dimethoate or rotenone emulsifiable concentrate, and trichlorfon is also very effective.

The above is the simple method for growing spaghetti squash. In fact, spaghetti squash is not difficult to grow, but to increase the yield you always need to put in some effort.
