How to Grow Dendrobium

The scientific name of Dendrobium is Dendrobium nobile, also called "fruit-on-leaf", and it is an epiphytic herbaceous plant. It is extremely nutritious, rich in protein, carbohydrates, calcium, phosphorus, iron and other trace elements. It is widely used in medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine believes it can moisten the lungs and stop coughing, invigorate blood and relieve pain, and it can also enhance body immunity, promote gastrointestinal digestion, and relieve many diseases. Among the people, it is used to make soup with poultry and meat, and its nourishing effect is quite good. Below, the editor brings you its planting method.

1. Planting Conditions

Before planting, you must first understand the growth habits of Dendrobium, so that you can grow it well. When planting Dendrobium, its environment and climate are very important. The growing environment of Dendrobium is quite special. It grows in mountainous areas at higher altitudes. It is an epiphytic plant, generally growing on thick, water-rich trees or humus-rich rocks. Therefore, when planting, you must choose such an environment to be able to cultivate it artificially.

2. Propagation

Dendrobium has strong asexual reproduction ability, so when planting, pseudo-bulbs are generally chosen for division propagation. Dig out the root system of the mature Dendrobium plant, and cut its bulbs into small tubers. Then evenly scatter these small tubers on the seedbed, water them, cover with a layer of wet soil and barnyard manure to overwinter. After March of the following spring, irrigate the seedbed and keep the water depth at 15cm. When the seedlings grow to 20cm, they can be transplanted. Seed sowing propagation can also be used, and the germination rate is generally above 70%, but the seedlings grow too slowly and it takes relatively more time.

3. Transplanting

When lifting seedlings for transplanting, first irrigate the seedbed, then pull out the seedlings, and transplant them at a row spacing of 20×30cm. Before transplanting, the land can be prepared and fertilized. If the soil is rich in humus, fertilization may not be needed. After transplanting, irrigate, and maintain water supply for the next two months. Increase the water level according to the height of the seedlings, but it should not be too deep, so as to avoid root rot and death.

4. Field Management

After the plants turn green again, apply 50 kg of human and livestock manure or cake fertilizer and 10 kg of urea per mu. When fertilizing, drain the water, leave a little water, and broadcast the fertilizer in the field. After 2-3 months, apply once more as appropriate according to the plant growth condition. During this period, do a good job in weeding to avoid affecting growth. In addition, pay attention to lodging. Once lodging occurs, prune and straighten it in time, and also prevent and control pests and diseases.
