What kind of growing environment does spinach cultivation require?

The growing environment for cultivating spinach

Spinach is one of the most popular vegetables in our country. Spinach has very high nutritional value, and it has various effects such as stopping bleeding, quenching thirst, and promoting bowel movements. Its status among vegetables is relatively high, and growing spinach has also become a major vegetable cultivation project in our country. However, growing spinach still requires certain conditions, because spinach has certain requirements for the surrounding growing environment. So what kind of environment does growing spinach require? Let's take a look below!

1. Temperature

Spinach has very strong cold tolerance, the strongest among all leafy vegetables. As long as the temperature after sowing is not lower than 4°C, it can germinate and emerge normally, though the most suitable temperature for seed germination is around 18°C. Its optimum growing temperature is also around 18°C. When the temperature exceeds 26°C, the growth of spinach is restricted and it cannot grow normally. The aboveground plants can develop normally at temperatures as low as around 6°C, so during the process of growing spinach, the surrounding temperature must be strictly controlled so that the growth of spinach stays in the most suitable environment, promoting growth and preventing problems caused by unsuitable temperatures.

2. Light

Spinach needs a relatively long period of light during its growth process, because flower bud differentiation is directly related to light duration and intensity. A long light period and high intensity are beneficial to the flower bud differentiation of spinach, promoting flowering, pollination, and fertilization. Moreover, when promoting flower bud differentiation, not only must light be ensured, but the plant should also be kept in a low-temperature state as much as possible. After flower bud differentiation, increasing the temperature and maintaining the light period can promote bolting and flowering in spinach. By increasing the pollination rate, the growth ability of spinach becomes stronger and stronger, and quality and yield will further increase.

3. Water

Spinach is a vegetable with a relatively large water requirement. This is because spinach has large leaves, is tender and full of water, and has many water-demanding organs. Therefore, during the growing process, sufficient water must be ensured in the field. Insufficient water will cause spinach plants to be short and weak, reducing yield, lowering quality, and making commercial value extremely low. If kept for a long time in a high-temperature, waterless environment, the growth of spinach will be inhibited, and the rate of reproductive growth cannot be controlled, making spinach prone to premature bolting. During the growing process, the air humidity for spinach should be maintained at around 85%, and the soil humidity must not be lower than 70%.

4. Soil

Spinach does not have great requirements for soil. It can quickly adapt to various different soils and grow normally, though yield and quality will also differ to some extent. Therefore, if you want to grow high-yield and high-quality spinach, you should still choose soil with high fertility, looseness, and strong ability to retain fertilizer and water. Pay attention to the pH value of the soil. Slightly alkaline soil is beneficial to the growth of spinach, while overly acidic soil will prevent spinach from growing. Spinach has strong growth ability, so we should increase the nitrogen fertilizer content in the soil to promote the growth of spinach.

The above four points are a brief introduction to the growing environment requirements for spinach cultivation. The prerequisite for growing spinach is to consider these factors well. Check whether the growing area is suitable for spinach cultivation. Do not choose blindly, otherwise all your effort will be wasted, and you will be the only one who suffers the loss.
