Coltsfoot Flower Planting Techniques

Coltsfoot, also known as winter flower and butterbur, is a commonly used traditional Chinese medicinal herb with a long history of medicinal use. It is a common medicine for moistening the lungs and directing qi downward, relieving cough and resolving phlegm. Coltsfoot flower is distributed in most areas of China. Due to the depletion of wild resources and declining yield, artificial cultivation has emerged. Let's take a look at its planting techniques below.

1. Site Selection and Land Preparation

For planting coltsfoot, generally choose shady slopes or low-lying sunny slopes in mountainous areas. The planting soil is preferably sandy loam with loose and fertile texture and good drainage, and the plot should have convenient drainage and irrigation. Avoid continuous cropping on the same land. Before the winter freeze or when the soil thaws in spring, deep plow, harrow fine, and level the plot, and apply sufficient base fertilizer during plowing, applying 1000-1500 kg of decomposed compost per mu. Then make flat beds or raised beds according to the terrain, and dig drainage ditches.

2. Sowing

When coltsfoot seeds mature, pick the fruits together with the seeds, wrap them in paper towels or cloth, place them in the sun to dry, and rub off the pappus or use them as seeds. Evenly scatter the seeds on the bed surface, then cover with a thin layer of soil. After covering with soil, use plastic film or straw to cover, keeping warm and moist. Seedlings begin to emerge after about one week. After the soil thaws in the following spring, they can be transplanted.

3. Field Management

After the seedlings emerge, remove the plastic film and straw. Check frequently, timely fill gaps and thin seedlings to increase ventilation and light penetration among seedlings. Thinning is generally done in April-May. During thinning, remove diseased and weak seedlings, keep the large and remove the small, and cultivate strong seedlings. After the seedlings grow uniformly, combine thinning with loosening soil and weeding. This can prevent weeds from affecting seedling growth and also accelerate root development. During the last loosening and weeding, earth up the soil to prevent flower buds from being exposed above the ground, which would affect quality.

4. Fertilizer and Water Management

Topdressing can be done in combination with cultivating and weeding, but topdressing should be done first, then cultivating. Each topdressing can apply 1000 kg of compost mixed with plant ash per mu. To promote plant growth, generally no topdressing is applied in the early stage. Topdressing is done 1-2 times in autumn when flower buds form, applying 15 kg of nitrogen fertilizer and 8 kg of phosphate fertilizer each time. In spring, plants need a certain amount of water for growth, so if it is too dry in spring, water timely. However, also avoid waterlogging caused by the rainy season, and take good drainage and waterlogging prevention measures.
