The specific process of growing onions

As a common vegetable in our daily lives, the onion holds a status comparable to garlic, scallions and ginger. Onions contain a pungent odor that irritates people's eyes when cutting them, causing tears. Onions are grown fairly widely in our country, but many people still do not know how to grow them. So today, the editor brings you the specific process of growing onions. Let's take a look below!

1. Choosing the site

Onions have strong adaptability and can grow normally in almost all soils, but the nutrient absorption capacity of onion roots is not strong. So when growing onions, we should choose fertile, loose soil to promote root growth and development. The soil's ability to retain fertilizer and water, as well as its permeability, should not be too poor either. Moreover, onion growth requires a large amount of light, so choose an area with sufficient sunlight.

2. Preparing the soil

After choosing the soil for growing onions, the next step is to carry out mid-tillage and soil preparation. When preparing the soil, we should decide the degree of preparation according to the water and fertilizer conditions and permeability of the soil used for growing onions. After preparing the soil, loosen it and expose it under the soil to the sun for 5-7 days to eliminate pathogens, parasites and so on in the soil. Soil preparation is generally carried out together with the application of base fertilizer, in order to improve soil fertility and enhance the growth of onion seedlings.

3. Base fertilizer

As mentioned earlier, the base fertilizer should be applied together with soil preparation, and the amount of base fertilizer applied is determined by the area of the soil. Fully decomposed farmyard manure can be used as base fertilizer, but an appropriate amount of phosphorus, potassium, calcium and other elements should be added. When applying the base fertilizer, mix it evenly with the soil. After the onion seedlings emerge, apply nitrogen fertilizer in a timely manner to increase the growth rate of the seedlings.

4. Sowing

The correct sowing time is the key to ensuring normal seedling growth. Improper sowing time will hinder onion growth and affect onion yield and quality. In the south, the sowing time can be chosen in mid-September. According to past onion seedling emergence conditions, reasonably control sowing, and after the seedlings emerge, check and replant them in a timely manner. After sowing, cover with about 0.7-1 cm of nutrient soil to ensure uniform seedlings after emergence.

5. Transplanting and planting

When about 80% of the seedlings have emerged, transplanting and planting can begin, but the condition of the seedlings should be checked at the time of planting. Filter out some seedlings that are weak, overly large, or growing excessively. Use seedlings with well-developed roots and uniform growth distribution for planting. According to the growth condition of the onion seedlings, plant seedlings of the same specification together, which facilitates later management and also ensures seedling growth.

6. Management

After the seedlings are planted, pay attention to management to prevent various pathogens such as downy mildew and fusarium wilt, and do a good job in disease prevention and control. Because onions are mostly planted in autumn, when the temperature is relatively low, do not water too much after planting, otherwise the surface temperature will become too low and the growth rate of onion seedlings will be reduced. However, a certain amount of water is also needed, so during seedling growth, the amount of watering must be well controlled to ensure it will not affect seedling growth while still providing the amount of water needed for growth.

The above is an introduction to the specific process of growing onions. Onions are relatively easy to grow, but a correct process is still needed. So I hope everyone can master the correct growing methods. That is all for today's introduction. This article is for reference only.
