Points to note when planting Chinese honey locust

Chinese honey locust is also called Chinese honey locust pod. It has a very wide range of uses: it can be processed into soap, the seeds it produces can also be eaten, and both the pods and seeds can be used as medicine. It is planted in many regions of our country, though I believe many friends have never seen it. So do you know how Chinese honey locust is planted? And what points should we note during planting? Today we will mainly learn about the points to note when planting Chinese honey locust.

1. Soil

Soil selection is the most basic external factor for successful Chinese honey locust planting, because Chinese honey locust is a deep-rooted plant, so the soil layer of the planting site must be very deep. Second, it is a sun-loving plant, so the planting site should be chosen in a sunny area, the soil should be relatively fertile and rich in organic matter, and sandy loam is best. Never choose heavy clay or pure sand, otherwise many problems will appear during the growth of Chinese honey locust.

2. Time

The planting time of Chinese honey locust is also something we should note, because its planting time is not only related to the climate of the planting site, but also to the propagation method. Under normal circumstances, the planting time of Chinese honey locust is April to May each year, but if the root division propagation method is used, then in southern China the planting time is roughly between October and December, while in the north it is between March and April. In this way, the survival rate of the planted Chinese honey locust can be greatly guaranteed.

3. Seeds

When planting, whether seed propagation or root division propagation is used, we need to carry out treatment, which can improve the resistance of the plants. For seeds, we should choose plump ones without pests or diseases, then put them into water at about 45 degrees to soak. After one day, take them out, then mix them evenly with moist fine river sand. Under a suitable temperature, carry out germination until most of the seeds have cracked open, and then they can be sown. For root division propagation, it is necessary to choose healthy roots without pests or diseases, then cut them into small sections about 7 to 8 cm long for planting.

4. Trellising

When the stems and vines of Chinese honey locust grow to a certain extent, we need to set up a trellis for it so that it climbs and grows along the support. This is generally done when it is about 35 to 40 cm tall. The trellis is usually made of bamboo poles, and then a rope is tied to each bamboo pole. Bamboo poles about 1.5 m long are fine. If planting in woodland, then if there are nearby plants that Chinese honey locust can climb, it can be guided directly over to them so that it climbs and grows along naturally growing plants.

5. Pruning

When guiding Chinese honey locust to grow onto the trellis, what we should note is that excess branches should be pruned off. Generally, only two or three relatively thick branches need to be kept per plant. When these branches grow to a certain extent (about 4 to 5 m), we should remove the terminal buds of the branches so that more new side branches grow out. This can increase the yield of Chinese honey locust.

6. Pollination

The fruit-setting rate of natural pollination in Chinese honey locust is still acceptable, but in order to improve economic benefits, when it blooms we still use artificial pollination to assist pollination, thereby increasing its pollination success rate and clearly increasing its yield. Generally, pollen collection can be used for spray or smear pollination.
