Control methods for common fennel diseases

Fennel, with its unique aroma, is one of the seasonings commonly used in our daily lives. Its uses are extremely wide-ranging, and it is also quite commonly grown. However, fennel can suffer from diseases during cultivation, which seriously affect its yield and quality. So what diseases can fennel suffer from during cultivation? Let's take a look below at the control methods for common fennel diseases and pests, to reduce losses.

1. Fennel powdery mildew

Powdery mildew mainly harms the aboveground stems and leaves. When the disease occurs, it generally appears first on the more mature parts. When it occurs, white powdery lesions appear on the leaves. As the disease develops, the lesions gradually expand and merge, until an abnormally thick layer of white powder appears on the stems and leaves. In severe cases, the leaves lose their green color, shrivel and wither.

Control method: In the early stage of the disease, spray with triadimefon, thiophanate-methyl, or chlorothalonil for control. Spray once every 10 days, and 2-3 consecutive applications are enough for control.

2. Fennel root rot

Root rot mainly harms the plant's root system, causing seedling death or root rot, and in severe cases causes the plant to die, affecting yield. When the disease occurs, water-soaked lesions appear on the roots, which gradually turn into dark brown lesions, and finally the main root becomes yellowish-rust colored and rots. In humid environments, a white mold layer appears on the surface of the root crown, and the plant's leaves turn yellow, dry up and die.

Control method: Before sowing, use carbendazim to disinfect and sterilize the soil, or in the early stage of the disease, drench the roots with diniconazole emulsifiable concentrate or thiabendazole suspension concentrate for control.

3. Fennel sclerotinia rot

Sclerotinia rot mainly harms the stems and leaves. When the disease occurs, the affected areas become brown and moist, gradually soften and rot. In the later stage of the disease, cobweb-like mold wraps around the affected areas, and dark brown sclerotia form inside the stems.

Control method: Practice reasonable crop rotation. At planting, pentachloronitrobenzene can be mixed with soil to make poisonous soil and broadcast on the ground for disinfection. In the early stage of the disease, spray with pentachloronitrobenzene or iprodione for control.

4. Fennel gray mold

Gray mold mainly harms the leaves and leaf stalks of fennel, and sometimes also harms the corm. It usually infects through wounds on the leaf stalks, causing the leaves to become necrotic and rot and producing large amounts of gray mold. After the corm is infected, water-soaked grayish-brown lesions appear, and the lesions gradually soften and rot, producing large amounts of gray mold.

Control method: Before sowing, use metalaxyl or dimethomorph to disinfect the soil and seeds. In the early stage of the disease, spray with thiabendazole, anilazine, or vinclozolin for control.

5. Fennel viral disease

Viral disease harms the entire plant. It is one of the common viral diseases and can be spread by aphids, as well as through watering and fertilizing. When the disease occurs, the leaves shrink and deform, become twisted and tangled, or show mosaic mottling. Plant growth is restricted, affecting the plant's normal flowering and fruiting.

Control method: Strengthen aphid control to avoid spreading this disease through aphids. In addition, use virus-free water and fertilizer when watering and fertilizing. During cultivation, increase the application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers to improve the plant's disease resistance. In the early stage of the disease, spray with plant virus inhibitor emulsion or potassium permanganate for control.
