Causes of Hollow Celery and Prevention Methods

Celery is a common vegetable with a crisp, tender texture and high nutritional value, and it is deeply loved by us and widely grown. During cultivation, a hollow phenomenon appears, which affects profits. In fact, hollow celery is a common symptom and a phenomenon of tissue aging in celery. After becoming hollow, celery has more cellulose, a poorer texture, and also suffers reduced yield. So what causes hollow celery? How can it be prevented? Let's take a look at the detailed introduction below.

I. Causes of Hollowing

1. Temperature and light

Celery has certain requirements for temperature and light during growth. If the temperature is too low or light is insufficient, celery will suffer cold damage and the photosynthesis of the leaves will weaken, resulting in insufficient nutrient accumulation. It will also reduce the absorption capacity of the root system, leading to hollowing.

2. High temperature and drought

The crisp, tender texture of celery means that it itself contains a lot of water, so it has certain water requirements during cultivation. If the soil is too dry, causing a water shortage, the water shortage will hinder its absorption and transport of nutrients, and once this happens, hollow symptoms will appear.

3. Insufficient fertilizer

Celery has a shallow and underdeveloped root system, so its ability to absorb nutrients is relatively weak. Fertilization must be done with proper methods. In the early growth stage, phosphate fertilizer needs to be applied. If phosphate fertilizer is insufficient, symptoms such as weak seedling growth and leaf differentiation will occur, and in the late growth stage hollowing will appear.

4. Soil

Celery can adapt to slightly acidic or slightly alkaline soil. Many plants like loose, fertile sandy loam, but celery is different: it prefers clay loam with strong fertility. Planting it in sandy loam will lead to hollowing.

5. Harvesting too late

Hollow celery is also related to harvesting too late. Hollowing is a kind of aging phenomenon in celery. If harvested too late, the fibrous tissue in its stems continuously increases, and the absorption capacity of the root system declines, causing the stems and leaves to age and resulting in malnutrition, which leads to hollowing.

II. Prevention Methods

1. Select good seeds

When buying seeds, buy them from trusted suppliers, and choose varieties with strong adaptability to the environment, stress resistance, and stable growth for planting.

2. Control temperature and light well

During cultivation, keep the temperature at 15-23 degrees, and it must not be lower than 10 degrees at night, so that it can grow normally. Strengthen light to increase its photosynthesis and accumulate more nutrients, but avoid strong exposure.

3. Strengthen fertilizer and water management

When fertilizing, pay attention to timing and methods. It is recommended to focus on base fertilizer and supplement with topdressing. For base fertilizer, fully decomposed organic fertilizer or farmyard manure can be chosen, and for topdressing, dilute manure water can be used. Apply chemical fertilizer as little as possible, and when choosing soil, try not to choose sandy loam.
