What are the key points of Blackberry Lily cultivation techniques?
Blackberry Lily (Belamcanda chinensis) is a perennial herbaceous plant whose rhizome can be used as medicine, with effects of clearing heat and detoxifying, reducing swelling and relieving pain, and relieving cough and resolving phlegm. It mainly treats conditions such as tonsillitis and lower back pain. It is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions and is cultivated in every province in our country. Let's take a look at its cultivation techniques below.

1. Land preparation and fertilization
Choose a warm location with plenty of sunlight for planting. Blackberry Lily has low requirements for soil and can also be grown on dry hillside land, but sandy loam soil on higher terrain that is loose, fertile and well-drained is best. During land preparation, apply sufficient base fertilizer: 2000 kg of decomposed organic fertilizer per mu, spread it evenly on the ground, and mix it evenly with the soil during plowing. Then rake it fine and level it. Make flat beds 90 cm wide, irrigate in the beds, and plant once the surface soil is loose.
2. Propagation
Blackberry Lily has two propagation methods: seed propagation and division propagation. The sowing time is in November. Before sowing, subject the seeds to variable temperature treatment to increase the germination rate. When sowing, mix the seeds with fine sand and scatter them into shallow furrows, generally sowing 1-2 kg per mu. After sowing, cover with a layer of fine soil to level it off and press lightly. The division propagation method can be carried out at the same time as harvesting. Select rhizomes that are disease-free, undamaged and bright yellow in color, cut them apart by branch, with each rhizome bearing 1-2 root buds, place them in a cool place to dry until the wounds heal, then dig holes and plant. The spacing between holes is 20×9cm. The holes are 5-6 cm deep, one plant per hole, with the bud head facing upward, and seedlings will emerge after spring begins.
3. Fertilizer, water and soil management
Before Blackberry Lily emerges in spring, keep the soil moist so it emerges quickly. After the seedlings emerge, loosen the soil and remove weeds promptly, so that overly hard soil or too many weeds do not affect seedling emergence. The same applies to those emerging in winter, and attention must also be paid to temperature to prevent low temperatures from causing freeze damage. For those propagated by division, water once with winter irrigation water, and after emergence also loosen the soil and remove weeds, and earth up according to actual production conditions to prevent lodging. In rainy seasons, take good drainage and waterlogging prevention measures to prevent root waterlogging and rot, which causes reduced yield. To make Blackberry Lily grow thick and strong and to improve yield and quality, topdressing is essential. Generally, increase fertilizer before growth, and control fertilizer and water in the late growth stage. In the early stage, manure water fertilizer is generally used, while in the later stage, increase the application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer to improve yield.
4. Removing bolts and topping
Blackberry Lily generally bolts and flowers in July-August, and this is also the time of its greatest nutrient consumption. So besides the seed field, be sure to remove bolts and top promptly to reduce nutrient consumption, so that nutrients are supplied in a concentrated way to rhizome growth and yield is increased. According to practical production, fields after bolt removal and topping can increase yield by 10%. In addition, strengthen ventilation and light transmission between plants; otherwise, poor ventilation and light transmission will cause the leaves on the lower half of the plants to wither and fall. Remove the withered ones promptly to concentrate nutrients, which both avoids nutrient consumption and prevents and controls pests and diseases.
