Planting Methods for Caoguo

Caoguo is the fruit of a plant belonging to the ginger family (Zingiberaceae), genus Amomum. It is mainly distributed in the higher-altitude areas of southern China and is an economic crop that combines both medicinal and culinary uses. Its fruit, when used in cooking, can remove gamey and fishy odors and improve the taste of dishes, and the entire caoguo plant is a raw material for aromatic oil. The fruit can also be used as traditional Chinese medicine and has a good effect on treating abdominal distension and vomiting. So if you want to grow it on a large scale, how should you plant it? Let's take a look together below!

1. Land Selection and Seedling Raising

Amomum tsao-ko likes to grow in areas with fertile soil and moderate sunlight, so when choosing a planting site, we should choose a place with sufficient water sources, fertile soil, and about half shade. Also, excess trees and weeds around the area should be cleared to prevent them from competing with Amomum tsao-ko for the substances needed for growth. After selecting the land, begin propagating the seeds. Choose a mother plant with strong growth and high yield and take an appropriate amount of mature fruit. Then take the seeds out of the fruit, wash them clean, soak the seeds for about ten hours, and the seed coat's cuticle layer needs to be treated clean to help germination, and finally sow them. Apply sufficient base fertilizer, prepare the seedbed well, determine the planting density, water thoroughly after sowing, and cover with grass material to preserve water and fertilizer.

2. Transplanting and Establishing

The seedling raising time for caoguo is usually chosen in autumn and winter each year. With proper management, germination and sprouting generally begin after one month, and emergence is basically complete in about two months. The temperature for seed germination must not be lower than 15 degrees, otherwise seed germination will become very difficult. After the seeds have successfully sprouted, prevent the seedlings from being exposed to direct sunlight and set up shading equipment appropriately. When establishing, choose soil with relatively high humidity and sufficient nutrients, dig the planting holes well, determine the planting density according to the number of plants, and do not plant the seedlings slantingly. After planting, press and firm the soil thickly to prevent the loss of water and fertilizer.

3. Field Management

Caoguo has a weak absorption capacity, so weeds in the orchard should be removed appropriately, and the timing of weeding should be grasped according to the growth of weeds in the orchard. When weeding, prevent damage to the roots and plants, which would disrupt the plant's nutrient absorption and affect growth. Also, before the plants flower, carry out soil mounding to increase the plant's growth rate, and do not let the roots be exposed outside, ensuring the roots' nutrient absorption. The amount of water in the field should not be too much or too little. Drain accumulated water in the field promptly to prevent flower rot and root waterlogging, and also irrigate promptly in dry weather.

4. Pest and Disease Control

Any crop will develop certain pests and diseases during the planting process, and caoguo is the same, so pest and disease control is the most important part of the caoguo planting process. Observe the plants frequently; it is best to discover symptoms in time. Generally, caoguo diseases include leaf spot and phytophthora blight. Conduct specific inspections of the symptoms on the plants, then use the corresponding agents for control according to the actual disease situation. Pests are mainly stem borers, which gnaw inside the plant and cause seedling death. Cut off affected plants promptly and use pesticides such as dichlorvos for spraying control.

After all this is done, timely harvesting is needed. After the fruit matures, harvest and dry the fruit, because caoguo is basically sold mainly as dried fruit. After drying it, store it in a place without water, and bring it to market in time when needed. Pay attention to pruning the plants to ensure the flowering and fruiting rate for the next year.
