For high garlic yields, good spring management is key

Garlic farmer Qi Xinqiang has grown film-mulched garlic for many years, and through production has worked out a cultivation technique using double-layer plastic film mulching for garlic, achieving an earlier market launch for the garlic and a relatively high yield, with a yield increase of more than 10% per mu, which is worth learning from and drawing on for vegetable growers in the major garlic-producing areas. The cultivation technique is described below: 1. Select...
This spring, rainfall in the main garlic-producing area of Yongnian was on the low side, and the low temperatures were unfavorable for garlic's green-up, coupled with increasingly serious pest and disease outbreaks, so vegetable growers must do a good job of spring management, overcome the difficulties and achieve high yields. The specific measures are as follows:
1. Water at the right time for green-up. Choose a stretch of continuously fine weather and water at the right time for green-up; when watering for green-up, apply 20-30 kg of urea per mu to promote garlic tillering and strong seedlings.
2. Drench with sulfur-based high-nitrogen high-potassium fertilizer, plus biological bacterial fertilizer to lift the plants and promote seedling growth. When giving the garlic its second watering, choose sulfur-based high-nitrogen high-potassium fertilizer plus 10 kg of Tuyijia biological bacterial fertilizer and drench it with the water, supplying the garlic with balanced nutrients so it has good roots and strong seedlings.
3. Foliar fertilization. 2-3 days after finishing the green-up watering, use 200 g of Jintailong plus 2% urea per mu, or potassium dihydrogen phosphate plus Sufen boron 50 g, mixed with 15 kg of water, and spray the vegetables on a fine, windless morning after the dew has dried or before 5 p.m. Spray 3-4 times over the whole growth period, with an interval of 7-10 days.
4. Control soil-dwelling pests to promote a bumper harvest. In mid-to-late April, choose insecticides such as Lorsban and phoxim, 1 kg per mu, and drench with the water. First pour the pesticide liquid into a container and add water to make a stock solution, then drench it with the water, so that the garlic roots receive the pesticide evenly.
5. Apply the bolting water well. When the garlic scapes have emerged from the cap and are about 15 cm tall, use 8 kg of high-nitrogen high-potassium drenching fertilizer per mu and drench with the water, which helps improve the quality and yield of the garlic scapes.
6. Strengthen management after bolting. Apply more bulb-swelling fertilizer to promote the downward movement of nutrients and lay a good foundation for a high garlic bulb yield. After the scapes are all pulled, the nutrients in the upper part of the garlic plant will move downward; at this time, use 5 kg of potassium sulfate with a content of 65% per mu and drench with the water to promote bulb swelling.
