The market for long beans is good this year, and the price is still holding at more than 2 yuan per jin. Many vegetable growers can only look on enviously, because many long beans struggle to set pods, and even those that do set are only inferior pods that are basically worthless. However, recently in Dongxia Town, Qingzhou City, the author saw that the long beans grown by Zhang Huaqing were uniform in length and tender green in color, and he picked more than 300 jin in one go. After a conversation with Master Zhang, the author believes that Master Zhang's management experience is worth recommending.
First, adjust the plant in time. Remove the side branches below the first inflorescence on the main vine, that is, for the side branches at each node above the first inflorescence on the main vine, leave 1-3 leaves and pinch off the growing tip, keep the inflorescences on the side branches, and increase the pod-bearing positions. When the main vine grows to 2-2.3 m, leave one leaf on the side branches sprouting from the top and pinch off the growing tip, pinch to top the plant, promote the formation and development of flower buds at the lower nodes, and prevent the main vine from growing too long and tangling with each other between the trellises, which would prevent ventilation and air movement and also make picking long beans inconvenient.
Second, control temperature well and nurture the leaves and vines. The day-night temperature difference must be strictly controlled. Long beans have strong heat tolerance, and the suitable growing temperature is 25°C-28°C. During the flowering period of long beans, the suitable growing temperature should not exceed 35°C during the day and should not exceed 18°C at night, widening the day-night temperature difference. Therefore, temperature must be strictly controlled, and the ventilation time should be changed with the constant changes in outside temperature. In addition, if poor ventilation and light transmission occur at the bottom of the plant during production, it can easily cause flower and pod drop later, so the lower old leaves can be pruned in stages, and fallen leaves in the field should be removed.
In addition, seize the key period to supplement fertilizer and water. The flowering and pod-setting period of long beans is relatively long. After the first peak in yield appears, the plant's growth vigor weakens, with very few flowers and pods, resulting in a pause in production. Therefore, 5-7 days before flowering, timely apply 15-20 kg of compound fertilizer + 10 kg of superphosphate + 5 kg of potassium fertilizer to promote flowering and pod setting. During the peak pod growth period, apply fertilizer again, applying 15-25 kg of compound fertilizer per mu. After the peak pod period, according to the plant's growth condition, apply a certain amount of fully water-soluble fertilizer to extend the harvest period and increase long bean yield.
