Growing Methods for Bok Choy

We are all probably very familiar with bok choy, as it can be seen on our everyday dinner tables. Everyone knows that eating more green vegetables is good for your health, and especially those who often eat meat should occasionally eat some vegetables too, as this is the way to maintain nutritional balance. What's more, growing bok choy is very simple, so today let's learn the growing methods for bok choy together with the editor.

1. Land preparation and fertilization

Bok choy has no special requirements for growing conditions. As long as there is reasonable sunlight, and the soil contains a certain amount of nutrients, drains well, has strong water retention and good permeability, the land can be used for growing it. As for the growing temperature and some other conditions, we can regulate and manage them according to the specific situation. The soil of the bok choy growing plot should be tilled relatively fine, and at the same time there must be no standing water. When preparing the land, some plant ash or a sufficient amount of farmyard manure should be spread and then deep-plowed, so that the nutrients are not easily lost. At the same time, drainage ditches should be made well, which facilitates later irrigation and drainage.

2. Scientific sowing

Today's bok choy can basically be grown all year round; as long as you manage it well, it will still grow very well. Before sowing, if you are using seeds you saved yourself, then you need to screen out impurities as well as empty and bad seeds, and keep plump seeds free of pests and diseases for planting. Next comes sunning the seeds, and then you can sow. If the seeds were purchased, then you can sow them directly. There are two main sowing methods for bok choy, namely broadcasting and drilling. Broadcasting suits lazy sowers because it is quicker, while using drilling makes later field operations a bit more convenient.

3. Watering management

Before sowing, you need to water the soil first and then sow. Generally, seedlings will emerge in about three to four days. During this period, if the temperature is relatively high, then you need to water in time to maintain soil moisture. After the seedlings emerge, you need to water once; this watering can promote the growth of the bok choy seedlings. Finally, if there is too much water in the field, it must also be drained away in time.

4. Fertilization management

When watering for the first time after the bok choy seedlings emerge, we can use diluted night soil for irrigation. If there is none, then an appropriate amount of urea diluted with water can be used instead. Finally, fertilize reasonably according to the growth condition of the bok choy. It is best to use organic fertilizer for spraying, as this will not affect the quality of the bok choy.

5. Timely harvesting

We can harvest bok choy in batches. Although the sowing time is the same, there will be certain differences in the emergence, seedling stage and growth speed of bok choy, so when the first batch of bok choy has grown about ten leaves and is roughly 15 to 20 cm tall, we can harvest it. After that, each harvest can follow the principle of harvesting the large and keeping the small, and in this way we can continue harvesting several times. At the same time, during the harvesting process we can add an appropriate amount of newly sown bok choy, so that the supply can be continuous, but we must pay attention to pest control.
