Carrot seeds have a layer of bristles attached to the seed coat, so when sown by conventional methods, they emerge slowly and unevenly. After years of practice, soaking the seeds in hydrogen peroxide solution has proven effective, and it has been promoted and applied at the carrot production base in Xiangcheng County.
Soaking Time
Place the prepared 25% hydrogen peroxide solution in a container, pour in carrot seeds whose bristles have been rubbed off, stir with a wooden stick while pouring, and soak for 30-50 minutes.
Seed Germination
After soaking, remove the seeds from the hydrogen peroxide solution, then rinse them with clean water 3-4 times, draining the water while rinsing. After draining, place them in a container, cover with a damp cloth, and germinate. If the seeds are moderately mature and plump, generally more than 85% of the seeds will germinate in 7-8 days, and full seedling emergence will occur 5 days after sowing.
Precautions
First, before soaking the seeds, sun the seeds on a sunny day.
Second, use a chlorothalonil solution to sterilize the seeds that have already been soaked and germinated.
Third, the seeds that have been soaked, germinated and sterilized should be sown promptly, and the soil is required to be moist.
Fourth, after sowing, cover with 0.5-1 cm of soil and press down lightly, then use a cover to shade from the sun. When 10%-15% of the seedlings have emerged, remove the cover.
