Why is yam cultivation using the hole-drilling method not high-yielding?

1. Plastic sleeve cultivation technique 1. Processing the plastic sleeve Use rigid plastic pipe with an inner diameter of 6-7 cm, cut it into sections with a saw, each section 80-100 cm long, and slit it lengthwise with a slit about 0.5 cm wide. Then, at one end of the pipe, make a diagonal cut from a point 20 cm from the opening toward the opening, so that the end of the pipe is semicircular. On the plastic pipe...
In recent years, yam cultivation using the hole-drilling method has been hyped by the media as a hot cultivation technique. The so-called hole-drilling cultivation means drilling a hole 8 cm wide and 150 cm deep at the position where the yam is planted, so that the yam grows vertically downward along the hole, thereby avoiding the hardship of deep plowing and trenching in traditional cultivation methods. At first hearing, this cultivation method seems quite good, as it can create a good growing environment for yams without much effort. But in practice, Li Zhenyu found that apart from saving labor and effort, this cultivation technique is not at all conducive to high yield.
It is unrealistic to create an excellent rhizosphere environment for yams before planting solely by drilling a hole without digging trenches and deep plowing. Practice has shown that yams grown by the hole-drilling method do not, as people imagine, grow thick and straight in the holes. Analyzing the reasons, Li Zhenyu believes that although hole-drilling cultivation can also create a relatively good rhizosphere environment for yams, the range of this environment is, after all, very narrow, which is not conducive to the extension of the yam root system. In addition, if the soil cannot be deeply plowed, fertilizer cannot be applied deeply, which is also an important reason why it is not conducive to yam root growth. From this it can be seen that yam hole-drilling cultivation is merely a lazy man's cultivation method, not a good measure that can promote high quality and high yield of yams, and therefore it is not advocated in production.
At the same time, Li Zhenyu pointed out that for yams to be high-quality and high-yielding, the basic measures must be done well: First, deep plowing of the soil must be carried out before planting, with a depth of 70-100 cm being appropriate, and thereafter shallow plowing can be done once a year in combination with fertilization, with a depth of 40 cm being appropriate. Second, apply heavy amounts of organic fertilizer. Along with deep plowing, 3000-4000 kg of high-quality chicken manure and 60-80 kg of compound fertilizer can be applied per mu. If used in combination with biological fertilizer, the effect is even better. Third, high ridges with deep furrows must be adopted to optimize the rhizosphere growing environment for yams.
